The Vermont Pub & Brewery in Burlington is closing. Its last full day of service will be Saturday, Nov. 14, the brewpub said in an Instagram post on Monday, Oct. 26, WCAX reported. WCAX calls it Vermont’s oldest craft brewery.
“Since 2020, we’ve struggled to get back to the level of business that is necessary to sustain our operation, and unfortunately we just don’t have the resources to hold out any longer for that day to come,” the post said, as quoted by WCAX.
Why the Vermont Pub & Brewery is closing
The pub’s own explanation is the pandemic hangover: business never got back to where it needed to be after 2020. WCAX adds that the news comes as downtown Burlington businesses struggle with fewer visitors.
Neither report gives sales figures or says what will happen to the building, the brewing equipment or the beer recipes. We’ll add those details if the Vermont Pub & Brewery shares them.
Greg Noonan’s brewpub
The Vermont Pub & Brewery opened in 1988 at 144 College Street. Its website says it was the state’s first brewpub, opened after founder Greg Noonan lobbied Vermont to allow on-site drinking at the same place the beer is made. Brewbound notes the Nov. 14 close falls three days after the pub’s 38th anniversary, and calls the late Noonan an architect of the state’s craft beer industry.
The brewery says it still brews many of Noonan’s original recipes, alongside new ones from brewmaster Scott Gawitt. That’s a long run for any pub on any planet.
Last call in Burlington
If you want a final pint at the Vermont Pub & Brewery, you have until Nov. 14. The website still lists daily hours from 11:30 a.m. WCAX’s report doesn’t mention any farewell events, so check the pub’s social channels before you go.
It’s been a rough autumn for long-running breweries. Kannah Creek Brewing in Grand Junction, Colorado, closed Oct. 24 after 21 years.
