Signal from the Badger State is fading: one lab, one final experiment, lights out soon.
The Delta Beer Lab closing is official. The Madison, Wisconsin, brewery announced on Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2026, that it will end regular taproom service at 167 E. Badger Rd. on Sunday, Oct. 25, then open for limited hours the following week to sell its remaining packaged beer. It is going out with one last release, a West Coast IPA called Supernova.
The closure was first reported by Channel 3000 (WISC-TV), and WMTV15 followed with the date. The brewery’s own home on the web is delta.beer.
When the Delta Beer Lab closing happens
WMTV15 reports that regular operations end on Sunday, Oct. 25, with limited hours during the following week to sell the rest of the inventory and give customers “a true last call.” Neither report lists the exact days or times for those final packaged-beer hours, so check delta.beer before you beam over.
Delta plans nightly events through its final week of regular service, according to the report:
- Tuesday: Drag Queen Bingo
- Wednesday and Thursday: trivia nights
- Saturday: a makers’ market
- Sunday: Sunday Funday to close it out
Why the Delta Beer Lab closing came now
Delta opened almost eight years ago and, as Channel 3000 notes, survived the COVID-19 pandemic when some Madison-area breweries did not. The aftershocks caught up. Founder and chief beer officer Tim “Pio” Piotrowski put it this way: “Persistently rising inflation year after year has led to reduced consumer spending nationally and locally, while operational costs, including labor, have continued to rise. We fought as hard as we could, but we have ultimately run out of resources.”
Those three pressures (inflation, softer spending, labor costs) show up in plenty of Bureau files from this year. The statement on the Delta Beer Lab closing doesn’t name tariffs, debt or a landlord, so we won’t either.
The last beer: Supernova
The brewery is marking the Delta Beer Lab closing with Supernova, a West Coast-style IPA. The specs come from an Oct. 12 review in Isthmus, published about a week before the closure was announced:
- Style: West Coast IPA
- ABV: 7.5%
- Bitterness: 80 IBU
- Hops: Simcoe, Centennial, Amarillo and Mosaic
The tasting impressions there belong to the Isthmus reviewer, who wrote that it “leans toward piney bitterness layered on a rich malty backbone” and is “strong at 7.5% ABV, but complex, full of hop flavor.” Isthmus also reported that Piotrowski designed the beer and was back in the brewhouse daily after staffing changes. Its listed prices, $8.50 a glass and $18 a four-pack, were from the Oct. 12 review and may not hold for the final days.
Naming your farewell beer after an exploding star is, from where the Bureau orbits, a tidy bit of poetry.
The bigger picture
The Delta Beer Lab closing joins a long autumn list. The Bureau recently covered Hoppin’ in Charlotte, the Marston’s brewery closure in England and fewer openings and more closings in California. Not every story ends the same way: The Roadies Brewing closed and later found a way back. Nothing in Delta’s announcement suggests a comeback, but nothing rules out a buyer either; the report doesn’t address what happens to the space or equipment.
