Another taproom just flashed the “buyer wanted” beacon. Mile Wide Beer Co., the Highlands brewery on Barret Avenue in Louisville, Kentucky, will end business under its original owners on Dec. 31. The brewery’s owners announced the news on Facebook on Monday, Nov. 2, and say they hope a buyer takes it over, WDRB+WAVE reported.
Why Mile Wide Beer Co. is closing
The owners didn’t give a single reason, but they were frank about the market: “The state of the industry right now is as challenging as it’s ever been, and most of us are hanging on by a thread.” They also wrote that they’ve been “proud to brew award-winning beer, provide friendship, and nurture community for our city & our state for ten wonderful years.”
Open through Dec. 31
- Location: Barret Avenue, Highlands, Louisville
- Last day under the original owners: Dec. 31
- Until then: the taproom stays open
- Next: the owners hope to find a buyer
The brewery has been open for nearly 10 years, and the owners say they still plan to celebrate the 10th anniversary before the end.
It’s the same pattern as Severance Brewing in Sioux Falls: owners stepping back and hoping someone else keeps the lights on, rather than a flat shutdown. Out west, Black Market Brewing in Temecula closes Nov. 15.
Last rounds in the Highlands
The owners told Louisville to support local breweries “every way” it can. If Mile Wide is one of yours, there’s still most of two months to drink a pint there, and to hope a buyer turns up before the countdown ends.
