Chandler Street Breweries Closing: Community Beer Works, Thin Man and Smoldered Society Shut Down

Chandler Street Breweries Closing: Community Beer Works, Thin Man and Smoldered Society Shut Down

The Chandler Street Breweries closing was announced Thursday, Oct. 22, 2026. Community Beer Works, Thin Man Brewery and Smoldered Society, the three Buffalo craft beer brands that made up the shared venture, are ceasing all operations effective immediately, according to Spectrum News 1. The taproom at 166 Chandler St. in the Black Rock neighborhood closes as well.

What the Chandler Street Breweries closing statement says

The owners posted a statement that the company has published on its own website and that local outlets, including WIVB, quoted. In short, the statement says:

  • the business has operated at significant financial losses for several years, while ownership kept investing;
  • buying Thin Man, merging the three brands’ production, cutting overhead, rebuilding distribution and opening the shared taproom nine months ago were all attempts to fix that;
  • the craft beer category shrank, costs kept rising, consumer habits changed and distribution got harder;
  • continuing to fund the losses was no longer viable.

The company summed up the market in four short sentences, the first two of which read, as quoted by Spectrum News 1: “Craft beer declined. Costs continued to rise.” It also drew a line between the beer and the business: “The beer didn’t fail,” the statement said.

Three brands under one roof

Community Beer Works bought Thin Man Brewery in 2024 and launched Smoldered Society, then moved all three under one roof at Chandler St. earlier this year, per Spectrum. The Buffalo News reports the group is winding down after years of significant losses. BTPM (Buffalo Toronto Public Media) adds that Thin Man was founded in 2016, with Smoldered Society following more recently.

The Chandler Street Breweries closing ends a consolidation that was meant to cut costs and keep all three brands alive.

One date does not line up. Spectrum says Community Beer Works opened on Lafayette Street in 2011. The company’s own statement, the Buffalo News and BTPM all say 2012. The Bureau is going with the company’s version, and flags the discrepancy.

A gold medal in the final month

The statement points out that Community Beer Works’ Pumpkin Spice Whale won gold in 2026, and the Great American Beer Festival winners list confirms it: gold in the Pumpkin Beer category, which drew 69 entries. The company wrote that the quality of the beer did not vanish because the economics got hard. Sadly, a trophy does not pay a distributor, and the Chandler Street Breweries closing arrived the same month as the medal.

What we still don’t know

Several questions about the Chandler Street Breweries closing remain open:

  • How many employees are affected. The Buffalo News says the statement did not specify.
  • What happens to the brand names, recipes, equipment or the Chandler St. space.
  • Whether any of the three brands will be sold or revived.
  • How to get refunds for tickets or private-event bookings. The taproom’s events page still listed a trivia night for Oct. 29 when the Bureau checked, so do not count on it.

The Buffalo Business First headline says the venture shut down nine months after opening. The full article sits behind a paywall, so the Bureau did not rely on it for anything beyond that headline.

Why the Chandler Street Breweries closing matters

This is one local story, but it fits a pattern. On Oct. 15 we covered California craft breweries closing, where Brewers Association figures showed U.S. craft breweries down 3.5% from 2024 to 2025 and craft production down 3.8%. Buffalo’s owners cite rising costs and changing consumer habits, which echo the pressures in that report.

If you have a favorite Thin Man, Community Beer Works or Smoldered Society beer, and you find a can on a shelf this week, the Bureau suggests drinking it with respect. We will update this post as the Chandler Street Breweries closing details come in.

Transmission complete. Hoist something Buffalo-brewed.
