Local brewery and beer-media outlet releasing Cover Story IPA

Award-winning Burgeon Beer Co. teams with San Diego Beer News to brew a West Coast IPA

and release it in Little Italy on August 6 to celebrate the news site’s one-year anniversary

SAN DIEGO, CA (July 12, 2021)—In the midst of a global pandemic, with numerous local magazines and media entities folding or going on hiatus to survive the COVID era, a news outlet devoted to covering San Diego’s world-famous brewing industry and rich craft-beer scene launched. That interest, San Diego Beer News (SDBN) has since become the most-searched and comprehensive online resource for information on the county’s 150-plus brewing companies and beer-centric businesses. To celebrate SDBN’s upcoming one-year anniversary, award-winning Carlsbad-based brewery, Burgeon Beer Co., has brewed a collaboration beer to commemorate that milestone. A hoppy West Coast IPA overflowing with tropical and citrus flavors and aromas, the beer is called Cover Story IPA and will debut at a public-release event at Burgeon’s Little Italy tasting room on Friday, August 6.

“Starting a business during a pandemic was daunting, but it had been a longtime ambition of mine to create a modern, utile website providing daily news on San Diego’s thriving beer scene as well as resources for locals and visitors alike,” says founder and Executive Editor Brandon Hernández. “It’s been a sincere honor to provide a platform for local breweries, especially at a time when they needed a voice and a helping hand more than ever.”

A native San Diegan, Hernández has covered San Diego’s brewing industry for local and national magazines, newspapers, television stations, podcasts and online outlets for 14 years. He has also authored a pair of guides to San Diego County breweries and worked in the marketing departments for local operations Stone Brewing, AleSmith Brewing and Societe Brewing.

In devising the recipe for Cover Story IPA, Burgeon co-founder and Head Brewer Anthony Tallman asked Hernández if he had any preferences. The beer journalist’s wish list was that the beer incorporate Mosaic hops as well as a hop varietal from New Zealand, and come in between 6.5 and 7% alcohol-by-volume. The resulting 6.8%, crisp, medium-bodied IPA boasts a dynamic hop bill that includes Mosaic, Motueka (from New Zealand), Citra, Simcoe and Cashmere, which combine to create vibrant aromas and flavors of pineapple, passion fruit, tangerine and orange pith.

“We have been fortunate to receive tremendous support from Brandon through the wide range of media outlets he has represented over the years. It was a great honor when he approached us about collaborating on San Diego Beer News’s first-anniversary beer,” says Tallman. “West Coast IPA was an easy style selection to start the conversation, which then led into the qualities we wanted to achieve in the beer. Cover Story features a light-colored malt profile, which results in an extremely dry and drinkable West Coast IPA that showcases the beautiful qualities of our hand-selected Mosaic, Motueka, Simcoe and Citra, plus a small amount of Cashmere.”

Cover Story IPA’s public-release event will take place Friday, August 6 from 4 to 10 p.m. at Burgeon Beer Co.’s tasting room in downtown San Diego’s Little Italy neighborhood. Dubbed The Arbor and located at 1326 Kettner Boulevard, the venue is equipped with a from-scratch, seasonally driven kitchen, and special menu items will be offered, all of which have been developed to pair with Cover Story IPA.

Fans may follow Burgeon Beer Co. (@burgeonbeer) and San Diego Beer News (@sdbeernews) on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook for beer-release details, and purchase the beer online (www.burgeonbeer.com) or at any of Burgeon’s locations in Carlsbad, Escondido and Little Italy beginning Friday, August 6.
