Bay City Getaway Day: The 3% Anytime IPA Gets a Homebrew Recipe

Bay City Getaway Day: The 3% Anytime IPA Gets a Homebrew Recipe
>> TRANSMISSION 10.26 // POINT LOMA // 3% IPA RECIPE DECLASSIFIED

Bay City Getaway Day, a 3% ABV “Anytime IPA” from Bay City Brewing in San Diego, now has a published homebrew recipe. San Diego Beer News released all-grain and extract versions on Oct. 26 as part of its Homebrew Summer series. The beer is pouring at Bay City’s Point Loma taproom, 3760 Hancock St.

What Bay City says about Getaway Day

Bay City’s beer page lists Getaway Day at 3.0% ABV, hopped with Citra and Idaho 7, on a malt bill of two-row, oats and Carapils. The brewery describes it as gold with a slight haze, with “punchy citrus, tropical hops, and a touch of malty sweetness.” The page says the beer arrived in April 2026.

SDBN calls it “less than half the strength of a typical IPA.” The brewery’s own pitch is that Bay City Getaway Day is a full IPA built for 3%, not a light beer.

Why a 3% IPA is hard to brew

Head brewer Austin Pinder told SDBN that Getaway Day was “one of the most challenging for us to develop.” He explained:

“Small variances in fermentation specs, hopping rates, and water chemistry can make a big difference in the flavor and perception in a beer with such a low alcohol content.”

Pinder added that it has “become a staff favorite for shift beers and weekend adventures.” The Bureau covered his arrival when Bay City named him head brewer.

Homebrewers can download both recipe versions from the SDBN post. The Bureau has not reproduced the recipe here.

Where to find Bay City Getaway Day

This part is not fully settled. Bay City has a second venue at 627 Eighth Ave. in the East Village, and a Sept. 14 post on the brewery blog said Getaway Day was on tap at both Point Loma and East Village. The beer page lists growlers, crowlers, cans and draft. The Bureau could not confirm whether East Village is pouring it today, or where cans are sold. Check with the taproom before you go.

Bay City Getaway Day joins a growing group of sub-4% IPAs. Another example is the 2.8% Upslope Fast + Light IPA.

Transmission complete.
