Iron Hill Brewery Returns: Teja Chekuri Reopens Five Brewpubs in PA and DE

Earthlings who mourned their regional brewpub chain last fall can unclench: Iron Hill Brewery is back, with five of its restaurants reopened under a new owner who once named his own brewery after it. Iron Hill‘s website now says “5 Breweries, all open” and lists Center City Philadelphia, Wilmington, Hershey, Huntingdon Valley and Lancaster.

The owner is Teja Chekuri, a Downingtown restaurateur and former regular at Iron Hill’s West Chester restaurant. PHILADELPHIA.Today, summarizing reporting by Emma Dooling in the Philadelphia Business Journal, says he’s behind an $8 million effort to revive the chain. Chekuri paid $3 million for Iron Hill’s intellectual property and the leases on five restaurants.

From Ironhill in India to Iron Hill Brewery

Chekuri drew on the brand when he opened a brewery and restaurant called Ironhill in India in 2017, and that business has since grown into a chain of its own. The American original went the other way. Founded in Newark, Delaware, in 1996, it grew to more than 20 locations across five states before shutting every location abruptly in September 2025 and filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy with more than $20 million in liabilities.

The new leadership blames rapid expansion under private equity firm Alvarez & Marsal Capital and mounting financial strain for the collapse, according to the report.

Who is running the five restaurants

The five reopened restaurants employ more than 500 people, and about 30% of them worked for Iron Hill before the shutdown. Former employees Alexis Lundeen, Eric Maney, Matt Gundrum, Walter Weddington and Taylor Hetzman make up the leadership team, and co-founder Mark Edelson is an advisor.

The plan is smaller and steadier: the beers the chain built its name on, its most popular menu items, better service and stable finances. Iron Hill’s locations page lists each brewpub’s address, hours and a live tap list.

West Chester and Exton stay dark

Chester County won’t get its Iron Hill back yet. The West Chester and Exton restaurants remain closed. Chekuri hopes to expand eventually but isn’t in a hurry. “Let’s not do something for the sake of doing it,” he said.

Reviving a fallen beer brand under a fan-turned-owner isn’t new. Our earlier report on Anchor Brewing and its new owner covers a similar comeback pledge on the West Coast.

Five pubs, one second act

Iron Hill is back in five markets, under a smaller and more cautious operation run largely by people who worked there before. The exact reopening date for each restaurant hasn’t been published, so check the locations page before you go. We’ll report back if West Chester or Exton gets a date.

Transmission complete.
