Deft Brewing Expansion: Bay Park Brewery Grows to a 3.5-Barrel Brewhouse

Deft Brewing Expansion: Bay Park Brewery Grows to a 3.5-Barrel Brewhouse

The Deft Brewing expansion is done. Deft Brewing, the Bay Park brewery known for European-style beers, grew its brewhouse from 2 barrels to 3.5 barrels several months ago and upgraded most of its fermentation tanks, San Diego Beer News reported Oct. 28.

What the Deft Brewing expansion changes

  • More lagers. The bigger system lets Deft make more of them and keep its taps full.
  • Fewer brew days. It now brews two to three times a week instead of four or five.
  • More flexibility in what SDBN calls a “turbulent” beer market.

Why go small instead of big with the Deft Brewing expansion? “Being lean and having a relatively small system has helped us handle challenges,” co-founder and brewmaster Mo Nuspl told SDBN. He said summer tasting-room sales were slower than expected.

Distribution? Not yet, but now possible

“We’re still not distributing our beer as we did on a limited basis prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, but now we have the capacity to do so if and when we decide to,” Nuspl said. So for now, the tasting room is still the place to drink it.

Visiting Deft in Bay Park

Deft is at 5328 Banks St., Suite A, inside The Gärten, a food-and-drink hub it shares with Lost Cause Meadery, Oddish Wine and a pizzeria (SDBN calls it Pizzeria Cassette; Deft’s site says Pizza Cassette). Its motto is “European Inspired. American Made.”

Deft’s website lists 15 taps and these hours: Sunday noon–9 p.m., Monday–Thursday 3–9 p.m., and Friday–Saturday noon–10 p.m. Check before you go.

Deft is on our San Diego Brewery List. The same SDBN roundup covered Ramona’s Smoking Cannon Brewery new tasting room. Small system, more lager: this Deft Brewing expansion is our kind of efficiency, Earthlings.

Transmission complete.
