Obey the Beer: Psychostick and Old Irving Brewing Pour a Vanilla Coffee Porter

Obey the Beer, a vanilla coffee porter brewed by Chicago’s Old Irving Brewing for comedy-metal band Psychostick, gets its first pour at the band’s Nov. 7 show at WC Social Club in West Chicago, Ill. The band announced the beer with a release-party post that is about as serious as you’d expect: “Hark! ‘Tis a Psychostick themed beer.”

This is a beer-and-band transmission, so the Auditory Frequencies desk is on it. Turn it up.

Obey the Beer: what’s in the can

Psychostick’s post calls it a “Vanilla Coffee Porter” brewed by “our friends at Old Irving Brewing.” The can art on the band’s site reads “Vanilla Coffee Porter, 1 Pint, 5.2% Alc./Vol.” and shows a cartoon headbanger with a giant red beard, labeled as a collaboration with Psychostick.

Beer club Tavour has a preorder listing with more detail. It says the porter is made with Madagascar vanilla and Hexe Coffee Co. beans, and describes “roasty latte notes” with hints of mocha, molasses and marshmallow and a dry finish. Those are Tavour’s tasting notes, not ours. We haven’t cracked one yet.

How a bartender started it

According to Tavour, the idea began when one of Old Irving’s bartenders met the band while touring with his own group. The name is a riff on what Tavour calls the band’s “facial hair headbanger, Obey The Beard,” which explains the beard on the can.

Psychostick’s release show in West Chicago

The release party is Psychostick’s Nov. 7 show at WC Social Club, 920 E. Roosevelt Road, West Chicago. The band’s tour page lists Texas Toast Chainsaw Massacre, Nemesis Engine and Dirt Jail on the bill, and flags it as the “first pour of ‘Obey the Beer Vanilla Coffee Porter’ by Old Irving Brewing.” The show is all ages, with tickets at $20 in advance and $25 on the day of the show.

If you can’t make West Chicago, the band is playing three more Midwest dates that week:

  • Nov. 5: Grand Rapids, Mich., at Pyramid Scheme
  • Nov. 6: Columbus, Ohio, at King of Clubs
  • Nov. 7: West Chicago, Ill., at WC Social Club (first pour)
  • Nov. 8: Madison, Wis., at High Noon Saloon

Only the West Chicago show is billed with the beer. Psychostick hasn’t said whether the porter will be poured anywhere else on the run.

Where else to find Obey the Beer

Tavour lists a 4-pack at $20 as a preorder, with an estimated ship date in early November. Old Irving hasn’t posted its own release details on its website yet, so check the brewery’s channels for taproom availability.

Love the beer, fear the beer

This one is exactly what you’d hope a Psychostick beer would be: a joke name, a ridiculous can and an approachable 5.2% porter to drink in the pit. West Chicago gets it first on Nov. 7.
