Today Kona Brewing Company launches its March to Maui sweepstakes – an exciting initiative that bridges Kona’s Aloha island spirit together with the legendary Maui Jim Maui Invitational. The annual tournament, which started in 1984, began following the historic 1982 upset of top-ranked University of Virginia to Chaminade University of Honolulu. To celebrate the incredible win and Hawaii’s passion for basketball, the Maui Jim Maui Invitational was born. Through the March to Maui sweepstakes, Kona Brewing Company embraces its own Hawaiian story and offers both basketball and brew fans an opportunity to attend this premier tournament, which takes place November 19-21.
To participate, fans are invited to text “MARCH TO MAUI” to 66555 to enter to win a dream trip for two to Maui from now until August 31. The complete prize package includes:
- Two round-trip airfare tickets to Maui (U.S. only)
- Two tickets to select Maui Jim Maui Invitational games
- Four-night accommodations
- Full details can be found at www.marchtomaui.com
“We at Kona Brewing think the Maui Jim Maui Invitational is the perfect moment to shed light on the Aloha spirit that shines throughout Hawaii, where fun competition brings together friends, culture and family,” said Eric Chang, Senior Hawaii Marketing Manager at Kona Brewing Co. “Through this we remind the mainlanders that the Aloha way of life is warm, welcoming, and, with a Kona in hand, absolutely refreshing.”
As the official beer sponsor of the Maui Jim Maui Invitational, Kona Brewing Company will donate all the beer for the three-day tournament & all sales of Kona beer during the tournament will benefit Charminade University’s athletic department. This is part of Kona Brewing Company’s continual effort to support the local community in Hawaii.

Kona Brewing Company was started in Kailua-Kona on the Island of Hawaii in the spring of 1994 by father and son team Cameron Healy and Spoon Khalsa, who had a dream to create fresh, local island brews made with spirit, passion and quality. Today, Kona is Hawaii’s largest and favorite craft brewery, known for top-selling flagship beers Longboard Island Lager and Big Wave Golden Ale and award-winning innovative small-batch beers available across the Islands. The Hawaii-born and Hawaii-based craft brewery prides itself on brewing the freshest beer of exceptional quality closest to market. This helps to minimize its carbon footprint by reducing shipping of raw materials, finished beer and packaging materials.
Kona Brewing Co. has become one of the top craft beer brands in the world, while remaining steadfastly committed to its home market through a strong focus on innovation, sustainability and community outreach. The Hawaii-based craft brewery is part of Craft Brew Alliance, an independent craft brewing company that brews and distributes a variety of award-winning craft beer and cider brands around the world. In December 1982, then No. 1 ranked Virginia, led by National College Player of the Year Ralph Sampson, played little-known NAIA Chaminade University in Honolulu while on the way back from a trip to Tokyo. The Silverswords stunned Virginia 77-72 in one of the greatest upsets in college basketball history. Two years later, in 1984, Chaminade University hosted the first Maui Jim Maui Invitational and it has proven to be the premier early-season college basketball tournament for 34 years running. Each year, the Maui Jim Maui Invitational attracts the top programs, best-known coaches and most outstanding players to compete in an exciting atmosphere at the Lahaina Civic Center near the beautiful beaches of Maui
