Field note from the Bureau's coastal lager desk: the humans of North County have moved Oktoberfest, and nobody filed the paperwork.
Culture Brewing FestCoast is the Solana Beach brewery’s limited-edition fest bier, and its Oktoberfest celebration runs through Sunday, Oct. 25, 2026, at all three Culture taprooms. That is well past the German calendar, which San Diego Beer News’ Brandon Hernández counted in his favor when he named FestCoast its Beer of the Week on Oct. 16.
If you missed the Munich window, this is your second launch opportunity.
What’s in Culture Brewing FestCoast
FestCoast is a fest bier sold in cans and four-packs. Culture builds it on floor-malted Bohemian Pilsner, Vienna, Carahell and Munich malts, with noble hops. Culture has not published an ABV, so the Bureau won’t print one.
Head brewer Jason Smith, in the brewery description SDBN printed, calls it Culture’s take on a modern German-style fest bier. He says it is slightly stronger and more flavorful than a typical light lager, and sits between a traditional Oktoberfest or Märzen and the lighter fest biers gaining popularity in Germany. In Culture’s words it is “smooth, malty, highly drinkable,” with “a rich malt backbone without feeling heavy or overly sweet,” and noble hops that bring “pleasant bitterness and subtle herbal, spicy notes.”
The SDBN verdict
Hernández, who says he works through as many local Oktoberfest-inspired beers as he can each season, called FestCoast one of the best he found this year. He wrote that it has everything he looks for in the style: “cereal character, light earthen sweetness, a touch of minerality and tremendous drinkability.” His test for a fest bier is whether you can finish a liter-sized stein. He reports he can “easily down two steins of FestCoast.” Bureau medical staff note that is a claim, not a recommendation.
Culture Brewing FestCoast celebration schedule
Culture is calling it three weeks of Oktoberfest festivities. As of today, Oct. 17, here’s what’s left:
- Every Saturday: stein-holding competitions, including today, Saturday, Oct. 17, and next Saturday, Oct. 24.
- Every Sunday: raffles, including Oct. 18 and the closing day, Oct. 25.
- All week: stein specials.
- To go: four-packs of Culture Brewing FestCoast while the limited release lasts.
The brewery hasn’t published start times or prize details for the competitions and raffles, so check with your nearest taproom before you go.
Where to find it: three coastal taprooms
- Solana Beach: 111 S. Cedros Ave.
- Encinitas: 629 S. Coast Hwy 101
- Manhattan Beach: Culture’s Los Angeles County outpost
Culture Brewing FestCoast may be new, but Culture is no newcomer to the Bureau’s files. We profiled the place in our Culture Brewing Co. brewery spotlight, if you want the background before your first stein. For the rest of the county’s taprooms, including this year’s closures and reopenings, see the San Diego Brewery List.
A fest bier field comparison, for the curious
Fest bier versus Märzen is a long-running Earth debate, and Culture has deliberately placed FestCoast between the two. If you want to study the lineage, our archive has a review of Firestone Walker’s festbier-inspired Oaktoberfest and a note on Karl Strauss releasing its Oktoberfest beer for a 35th straight year. Culture Brewing FestCoast is the newest local entry, and it has the longest party.
Hernández also made a point the Bureau finds anthropologically sound. Part of why fest biers feel special, he wrote, is that most brewers only make them for a short stretch each year. Culture’s longer celebration doesn’t change that. It just gives you more room to find a Saturday that works.
Hernández ended his write-up with “Prost!” The Bureau’s version: one stein, two hands, nine days left. Culture Brewing FestCoast festivities close Sunday, Oct. 25.
