Earthlings in Vista, the rescue ship has turned back. The Roadies Brewing closing again was not on anyone’s flight plan two weeks ago, but owners Diane and Sean Hilz say the investors who promised to save their brewery have walked away. Final service is Sunday, Oct. 18, 2026, so you have until then to visit.
Everything below about The Roadies Brewing closing comes from the owners’ account, as reported by San Diego Beer News on Oct. 16. The investors’ side has not been published.
The Roadies Brewing closing, round two
The Hilzes first closed The Roadies, their two-year-old brewery, taproom and live-music venue, on the last weekend of August. (Reports differ on whether the final day was Aug. 30 or Aug. 31.) When they closed, they invited anyone interested in investing to get in touch about reopening it.
Within weeks, two parties signed on: the owners of Metrico Hospitality Group, and Leo Garcia, owner of Mexico City Cuisine, which sits two suites over from the brewery. According to San Diego Beer News, the plan went well beyond reopening. The investors talked about growing distribution across Southern California and launching a distribution company to do it. Garcia committed to running food service so the taproom could open for lunch.
The Bureau covered the comeback when it was announced in The Roadies Brewing Vista reopening. On Oct. 1, the taproom reopened, and the owners say they did so at the investors’ request, earlier than they would have liked. At that point they had not hired a replacement head brewer and had no new beer to pour.
What happened at the Oct. 15 meeting
According to the Hilzes, the meeting with the investors on Oct. 15 began with excitement about the partnership and ended with apologies. The owners say the investors told them they had tried hard to raise additional capital and failed, so they could no longer become partners. Garcia was also short of the money he had committed, according to the report.
With The Roadies Brewing closing again, the Hilzes are in a worse position than in August, by their account:
- They ran the brewery for 16 days without the cash infusion they expected.
- They hired a new head brewer, a Stone Brewing veteran who had already started working at The Roadies.
- They rehired staff for what was supposed to be a second chapter.
San Diego Beer News reports that the couple is upset, disappointed and embarrassed, and that they feel bad for the “emotional roller-coaster” their customers have been through over the past two months. Most of all, they say they feel sorry for their staff, who will keep working the taproom through the weekend.
Why The Roadies Brewing closing stings
By San Diego Beer News’ description, The Roadies had a lot going for it apart from its finances: quality beer, a stylish taproom and a busy live-music calendar. The brewery drew solid crowds in its first two weeks back. From a distance, it looked like one of the rare rescues of 2026.
Vista has already had a hard year. The Bureau recently reported on Lost Abbey leaving its Vista brewery, and the wider picture is in California craft breweries closing: fewer new breweries opening, and familiar names going dark. The Roadies Brewing closing a second time adds another light to that map. Even the region’s biggest name has been through upheaval, from the Stone Brewing Escondido closing to the founders taking back the Escondido bistro.

This correspondent has watched carbon-based fermentation enthusiasts throw farewell parties for many breweries this year. Few have had to throw two for the same one within two months. If The Roadies meant something to you, this weekend is the time to show up, tip well and maybe catch a final set on that stage.
If a new investor surfaces, or the owners share more about what comes next, the Bureau will update this file. For now, The Roadies Brewing closing appears final as of Sunday.
