Emissions alarm in Rajasthan: a Carlsberg brewery is being told to power down. The Rajasthan State Pollution Control Board has revoked the consent to operate for the Carlsberg India Alwar brewery and ordered it closed immediately, with its power cut, according to Business Today, citing CNBC TV18. The report does not give the date of the order.
Why the Carlsberg India Alwar brewery was ordered shut
The Bureau’s sensors read two violations in the regulator’s order, as reported by Business Today:
- Particulate emissions: 633 mg/Nm³, against a permitted limit of 80 mg/Nm³, nearly eight times the ceiling.
- Monitoring data: only 35.12% of required emissions-monitoring data was uploaded to the Central Pollution Control Board’s online portal, against a required 85%.
The state board also told the local electricity utility to disconnect power to the plant. The action followed a Central Pollution Control Board inspection in July 2026 and its recommendation for closure, Business Today reports. The Alwar unit had received consent to operate in April 2024, valid until Oct. 31, 2028, subject to compliance. Business Today adds that failure to comply with the directions could invite further action under air and water pollution laws, and that the company will need to address the concerns before the plant can resume operations.
Put plainly, the scanners asked for 85% of the data and received roughly a third. Earth regulators, like alien ones, notice that sort of thing.
The IPO in the background
The order lands as Carlsberg India, the Danish brewer’s Indian business, prepares to go public. Business Today reports that the company confidentially filed draft IPO documents in July 2026 and that India’s Securities and Exchange Board (SEBI) approved the confidential pre-filing on Oct. 1. The offering could be worth about $700 million.
The outlet expects the Carlsberg India Alwar brewery closure to affect Carlsberg’s beer supplies in Rajasthan, though it says the immediate sales impact may be limited because the shutdown comes after peak summer season, and other breweries in the company’s network could help absorb it.
What Carlsberg says
Nothing yet. Carlsberg India had not responded to requests for comment as of publication, Business Today reports. The Bureau will update this transmission if the company or the regulator issues a statement on the Carlsberg India Alwar brewery.
Carlsberg’s British arm has had its own brewery news this month; the Bureau covered its proposed Marston’s brewery closure.
