What’s in the can

Did I Stutter? helles lager label from Twin Elephant Brewing and The Dillinger Escape Plan

The label lists Pilsner and Munich malts, Hallertau Mittelfrüh hops and lager yeast, plus both logos and the Brewers Association Independent seal. The brewery’s only description of it:

“It has been quite the honor and pleasure to collaborate with our friends from @dillingerescapeplan. This second project is one we put together to celebrate their Calculating Infinity reunion shows. We put together a little crisp, crushing, facial can smashing little German Helles number with some wonderful local farmhouse pilsner malt from @rabbit_hill_malthouse.”

Twin Elephant Brewing Co.

That farmhouse pilsner malt comes from Rabbit Hill Malt in Shiloh, NJ, a fifth-generation family farm where siblings Hillary Barile and Blair Bakker began floor malting in 2015. It calls itself “New Jersey’s first craft malthouse.” The hop, Hallertau Mittelfrüh, is “a classic German aroma hop associated with Bavarian-style lager beers,” per Yakima Chief.

What is a helles lager?

The BJCP defines Munich Helles as “a gold-colored German lager with a smooth, malty flavor and a soft, dry finish.” It was created in Munich in 1894 to compete with Pilsner. No official tasting notes exist; Bureau sensors have only Untappd telemetry: 245 check-ins and a 3.94 average from 200 ratings at press time.

Why is it called Did I Stutter?

It shares its name with a lyric from “Sugar Coated Sour,” the opener of Calculating Infinity (Relapse, Sept. 28, 1999). The printable portion: “did I stutter.”

The brewery calls Did I Stutter? its “second project” with the band. The first appears to be 43% Burnt (March 2023), a 13% rye bourbon barrel-aged imperial stout with vanilla, named for the Calculating Infinity track, with label art by original vocalist Dimitri Minakakis.

The Minakakis reunion was announced in December 2023, leading to Brooklyn Paramount shows June 21-23, 2024. Guitarist Ben Weinman, quoted by Revolver: “…something still feels unsaid as far as the Dimitri era of the band… This needed to happen!” Lineup: Minakakis, Weinman, James Love, Liam Wilson and Billy Rymer. Twin Elephant’s punk and metal tie-ins

Twin Elephant opened May 7, 2016, as Chatham’s first local brewery, on a two-barrel nano system; 2026 is its 10th anniversary year. Founders Scott McLuskey, Tim Besecker and Cynthia DeRama took the name from Besecker’s twin brother’s film company, per the Chatham Courier.

Other heavy-frequency beers include Live Your Heart helles with Hot Water Music and Beneath The Green DIPA with Vision of Disorder. A triple IPA series honors defunct NJ hardcore venues like City Gardens; its Middlesex County College listing recalls a 1998 Dillinger show.
