Paperback Brewing Co. Takes a Gold Medal for its West Coast Style IPA

Just months after celebrating its official launch, Paperback Brewing Co. has won a gold medal at the 2021 California Craft Brewers Cup, for its fan-favorite Tucked in by Strangers West Coast Style IPA. The impressive first win for the brewery, which began operations in July 2020, is in the ultra competitive American-Style India Pale Ale category — historically the most-entered beer style at competitions for commercial brewers.

“It’s always a great feeling to have one of the best three beers in any category, but taking Gold in the biggest category is beyond comparison,” said Paperback Brewing Co. Brewmaster David “Zambo” Szamborski. “Thanks to our whole team for making this happen!”

The second annual beer competition, presented by the Sacramento Area Brewers Guild, in partnership with the California Craft Brewers Association, showcases the best beers across the Golden State — home to 1,100 craft breweries, the largest number of any other state in the nation. In 2019, the competition’s inaugural year, 1,266 entries were submitted by 194 independent craft breweries.

Enjoy Paperback Brewing Co.’s medal-winning entry, Tucked in by Strangers, at the brewery’s Glendale tasting room (422 Magnolia Ave.) beginning this Friday, September 3rd.

Founded by prolific home brewers (and former entertainment industry colleagues), Brandon Monroe and Chris Cesnek, Paperback quietly began selling beer to-go only at its Glendale tasting room in early July 2020, due to COVID-19 restrictions on tasting room operations. Despite and in spite of pandemic-related challenges, Paperback quietly produced nearly 2,000 BBLs in its first year (releasing a whopping 37 brews) and added 400+ off-premise accounts from San Diego to Los Angeles, including 188 Trader Joe’s retail locations.

Award-winning Brewmaster (and 21st Amendment alum) David “Zambo” Szamborski, renowned for his fearless experimentation, brews flagship and seasonal beers on a 15 BBL brewing system. Paperback’s cans are emblazoned with the brewery’s signature colorful, action-packed pulp fiction cover-inspired illustrations that reference pop culture and music, with names like Bunny with a Chainsaw (Hazy Double IPA), Tucked in by Strangers (West Coast IPA), and Road Rage on the 405 (Double IPA).
