Journeyman Distillery Dives into Craft Beer with Sea of Monsters Brewery

Award-winning Journeyman Distillery is setting sail on a new adventure with the launch of Sea of Monsters, a brand new microbrewery within their sprawling “The American Factory” hospitality complex in Valparaiso, Indiana.

Known for their award-winning whiskeys, Journeyman Distillery, led by owners Bill & Johanna Welter, is taking their passion for handcrafted beverages a step further with Sea of Monsters. This exciting addition to “The American Factory” joins the existing distillery, full-service restaurant Union Hall, and event venues, solidifying the complex as a premier destination.

Leading the charge at Sea of Monsters is Head Brewer Greg Winget. A California native with Indiana roots, Winget brings over a decade of craft brewing experience. His journey started in beer sales and distribution before he transitioned to brewing, earning a Craft Brewing Certificate from Wake Technical College in Raleigh, NC. He honed his skills at prestigious breweries like Big Boss Brewing, Fortnight Brewing Company, and most recently, Wye Hill Brewing where he served as Brewery Director. Winget boasts an impressive record, having created over 100 unique beers and securing numerous awards, including Gold Medals at the North Carolina Brewers Cup and the Great American Beer Festival.

Sea of Monsters draws inspiration from audacious maritime explorers who braved mythical creatures and uncharted waters. This spirit is reflected in their slogan, “Face Your Fears,” and translates to a diverse selection of beers. Winget plans to brew both regional favorites like IPAs, stouts, and porters alongside international styles and even resurrected ancient recipes.

Diners and guests at the adjoining Union Hall restaurant can witness the brewing magic firsthand thanks to the brewery’s 10-barrel system, constructed by American leader Sprinkman. Winget embraces sustainability, prioritizing regionally sourced ingredients like hops grown in the Midwest and even foraged elements. Additionally, the proximity to the distillery allows for exciting collaborations: Sea of Monsters will experiment with barrel-aged beers utilizing Journeyman’s spent whiskey barrels and explore recipes that echo their signature spirits.

Sea of Monsters is setting course for a summer 2024 debut, offering beer enthusiasts a unique destination to explore the depths of flavor and “Face Your Fears” with a diverse and delicious selection of craft brews.
