As the craft beer movement grows ever stronger, beer is becoming increasingly local. Beers from some of the nation’s best breweries can only be found in their home cities, or, at most, a handful of surrounding states.
But, some small breweries — like North Carolina’s Burial Beer Company — have fans spread across the country. That’s why Burial has joined hundreds of other small producers to work with online retailer Tavour. Now, fans from coast to coast can gain access to Burial beers that were previously available in only a handful of markets.
Like many small breweries with a strong, cult-like following, Burial earned their nationwide reputation by impressing beer writers and judges. Popular lifestyle site Thrillist included Burial as one of their 13 Essential Craft Breweries of 2019. In Craft Beer and Brewing’s 2019 readers-choice poll, fans voted Burial the 7th Best Small Brewery in America. Their Separation of Light and Darkness Saison took first place in Paste Mag’s 2017 Saison blind tasting, beating out 115 other beers from powerhouse breweries like Hill Farmstead, pFriem, and Prairie Artisan Ales!
During normal times, ‘beer tourists’ make the trip to the original brewery and restaurant in Asheville, or Burial’s taproom in Raleigh. The brewery also also maintains a third location in a restored 1930s-era forestry camp with a second brewhouse, restaurant, and events space, as well as barrel-aging facilities.
But, in the face of quarantine orders and travel restrictions, brewery tourism will have to wait. With Tavour, fans have a new way to access Burial’s beers, along with hard-to-find offerings from other beloved breweries all over the country.
