Bob & Doug McKenzie are Back to Help Stop Ottawa’s Upcoming Beer Tax Hike

Bob and Doug McKenzie are back on Canadian airwaves, but this time they’re not promoting their Great White North album, nor are they selling beer. They’re rallying Canadians to oppose a planned increase in the federal tax on beer by 6.3%, the largest increase in 40 years. The increase is set to take effect on April 1, 2023.  Government tax already makes up almost half the cost of beer in Canada – the highest rate among G7 nations.

The iconic Canadian duo, Bob and Doug, are known for their humor, and they’ve used it to call on the federal government to “take off the beer tax increase, eh!” in a series of 30-second radio commercials. The McKenzie brothers are urging Canadians to oppose the tax hike, and they’ve even launched a website to help them do so.

According to Doug McKenzie, “the beer tax is already like my brother’s head – overinflated.” He added that the tax hike is like taking a sip of beer, then the government takes a sip.

The McKenzie brothers are encouraging Canadians to visit HereForBeer.ca, where they can use the site’s tools to send a message to their Member of Parliament to stop the tax hike. You can also listen to the new radio ads on the HereForBeer website.

CJ Hélie, the President of Beer Canada, welcomed the McKenzie brothers to the HereForBeer community, saying, “Beer helps bring neighbours, friends, coworkers, and communities together, and governments should not push it out of reach of hardworking Canadians.”
