Tröegs celebrates Scratch #500 milestone with Double Perpetual IPA

Tröegs celebrates Scratch #500 milestone with Double Perpetual IPA

Tröegs Independent Brewing is thrilled to announce the launch of Double Perpetual IPA, an enhanced rendition of their beloved year-round Perpetual IPA, debuting on Thursday, October 19.

This exclusive release marks a significant milestone, as it celebrates the 500th beer unveiled through Tröegs’ Scratch Series—a platform that empowers the brewery to explore novel brewing methods and ingredient combinations.

Tröegs celebrates Scratch #500 milestone with Double Perpetual IPA

Drawing inspiration from the immensely popular Perpetual IPA, Pennsylvania’s best-selling craft beer, according to data provided by Circana, an authoritative source on consumer behavior complexity, Scratch #500 incorporates abundant amounts of Cascade, Chinook, Nugget, and Citra hops. This amped-up Perpetual IPA delivers enticing hints of citrus and pine, creating a bolder flavor profile.

John Trogner, Tröegs’ brewmaster and co-founding brother, shares,

“One of the ways we share our creative process is through our Scratch Series.”

The Scratch Series was initiated in 2007 to coincide with the brewery’s 10th anniversary, and over time, it has served as a platform for potential seasonal and year-round releases. Perpetual IPA emerged as one of the initial success stories, a pivotal beer in Tröegs’ lineup.

Trogner reflects on the journey, saying,

“It’s hard to imagine Tröegs without Perpetual, but there was a time when we didn’t brew an IPA. Then, Citra hops came along, so we said, ‘Why not?’”

After numerous experimental batches in the Scratch Series, Trogner and his brewing team eventually perfected the recipe that would become the iconic Perpetual IPA, now one of Tröegs’ most recognizable and beloved brews.

The Scratch Series expanded when Tröegs relocated from Harrisburg to Hershey and installed a 15-barrel brewhouse designed for smaller batch production. In 2020, it gained even more precision with the addition of the Scratch Lab, a 3-barrel nano-brewery meticulously designed to mimic the temperature controls, pressure, and geometry of Tröegs’ larger 100-barrel production brewhouse.

“With the Scratch Lab, we can break up 15-barrel brews into nano batches,” says Tröegs Brewing Manager Tim Mayhew. “That allows us to test things like dry-hop combinations and yeast strains side-by-side.”

Scratch #500 is exclusively available on tap and in limited 16-oz. cans at Tröegs. Guests can savor it alongside an array of new dishes featured on the fall Snack Bar menu, currently offered in the Tröegs tasting room.
