The modern craft beer movement is one founded on a complex tapestry of tradition and experimentation. Prior to the industrial revolution, regional beer styles were directed by seasonality and local resources and breweries were responsible for literally sustaining their communities nutritionally and economically. Hot beer is one of the many seemingly quirky artifacts nearly lost in the annals of brewing history. Virtually every culture bound by cold-winter climate has a heritage with fermented beverages served to warm the body and soul.
To reintroduce this memento of brewing’s past, Primitive Beer, Cohesion Brewing and WeldWerks have teamed up to put on the inaugural Hot Bierfest & Holiday Marketplace on Saturday, Dec. 18 from 12 to 8 p.m. at Primitive Beer (2025 Ionosphere St, Longmont, CO 80504).
Inspired by Gluhwein (hot mulled wine) found in bountiful markets of Europe, the Bierfest will showcase three separate cultural traditions and methods for beer served heated. The festival will coincide with Primitive Beer’s annual holiday marketplace which features local craftspeople outside the alcohol industry and celebrates the rich legacy of local commerce with the art of fermentation. And if you’re still asking, but seriously, why hot beer? Simply put, the collaborating breweries are a bunch of fermentation friends who love to share good times while learning more about how varied and wonderful beer can be, especially when challenging their own understanding.
