The path to Troegs Independent Brewing’s Summer Hop Cycle IPA Field Study started with the same small-batch Scratch beer that led us to LolliHop. That’s when they started making subtle tweaks to mash temperatures, the mineral composition of the water, and the timing and temperature of hop additions.
Building on those experiments, Troegs Independent Brewing landed on a grain bill featuring a backbone of Rustic Pale Malt grown right in their backyard in central Pennsylvania. They then fine-tuned the hop combination through a series of Scratch beers. “After a few trials,” says brewmaster John Trogner, “we finally arrived at what we think is a winning combination for Field Study: Citra, Mosaic and El Dorado.”
Look for notes of ripe grapefruit, mango, pear and melon. Find this slightly hazy yet bright summer daydream in Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Massachusetts and New York starting this week, and everywhere else Tröegs is sold over the next few weeks.

In Troegs Independent Brewing’s Double IPA LolliHop, dry-hopping with Citra and Mosaic layers in notes of orange, grapefruit and melon, while Azacca in the kettle adds hints of papaya and pineapple. On top of all that goodness, the backbone of this delectable double comes from pale malt grown in Troegs Independent Brewing’s area, central Pennsylvania. How cool is that?
