While strolling by the beer cooler at the local grocery store, I spotted an import from Wychwood Brewery Company Ltd., located in Witney, Oxfordshire, England, called “Scarecrow Organic Golden Pale Ale”, with an ABV of 4.5%. It is brewed with organic Plumage Archer barley malt and Target hops.  Something about the eery, smirking Scarecrow with an owl perched precariously upon its shoulder with a smiling red fox lurking in the depths of a field of straw seemed to encompass the spirit of Haloween in the air.

Appearance: From the glass this beer appeared a hazy, amber-orange color, which at first displayed lots of small bubbles creating a cream-colored head that ultimately had low carbonation and dissipated quickly.

Taste: At first sip, began a mildly bitter hop-forward experience of earthy sage and white grape, followed by a low bready and biscuit malt profile, finishing slightly fruity and dry.

Smell: A persisting sweet citrus climbed out of the glass at first, yet with subdued earthy sage hop aroma, and hints of bready malt.

Mouthfeel: The sensation was a medium, smooth and creamy mouthfeel with carbonation present at first, and a low overall astringency, that consisted of a light warmth that faded quickly into a dry finish.

This Golden Pale Ale strikes me as a solid year-round palate refreshing table beer, with a mild character that my alien culinary senses would love to try with a range of milder food, such as roast chicken, fish & chips or mild cheese.
