Avery Brewing Company holds a special place in our alien hearts. A few years ago we traveled up to Denver, Colorado, with a few human friends for the sole purpose of trying new craft beers. On this trip we took the short drive to Boulder, paying a visit to Avery Brewing Co. This is where we first fell in love with The Maharaja.
Avery Brewing Company’s The Maharaja is an Imperial IPA boasting glorious amounts of big citrusy hops. This beer is part of Avery’s Dictator Series and according to the Avery description, Maharaja means “great/king”. Derived from the Sanskrit words, mahat meaning “great” and rajan meaning “king”, this beer is definitely deserving of it’s name.
Avery Brewing Co. – The Majaraja Imperial IPA
Seasonally released January through July on tap and in 22oz. bottles
Appearance: Deep gold, almost burnt orange presentation. Has a lingering, off-white head and thick rings that stick around the glass with each sip.
Aroma: In one word, mouthwatering. This beer slaps you in the face with big citrus and piney hops followed by a sweet after note and bready malts.
Flavor: The first sip smacks you in the face with big piney hop flavors of grapefruit, lemon, and piney goodness. The bold hop profile with the sweet caramel and bready malts creates a delicious and balanced IPA.
Mouthfeel: This beer is medium bodied with a creamy fullness and delightful bitterness that lingers on the palate.
Overall: This brew has the perfect balance of hops and malts. The hops provide a wonderful blend of citrus and resinous pine while an apparent malt backbone and well hidden alcohol content make for a dangerously delicious Imperial IPA.
