Bear Republic Brewing Company and Coronado Brewing Company recently partnered up to create a collaboration beer: The Merbear Rye IPA. However, this isn’t your typical collaboration. Each of the two breweries used the same ingredients in their brews, but each put their own twist to it. The result of this is a Northern and Southern California version of the same beer, and we’d like to hear from you humans which is more to your liking!
Merbear Rye IPA Details:
IBU 65 (Bear Republic) | 45 (Coronado)
Style: Rye IPA
Appearance: Pours copper with a cream head that quickly falls.
Bear Republic’s take on the Merbear Rye IPA has an almost earthy and piney aroma to it, along with the rye. The hops in the beer were balanced out with strong malty caramel and toffee notes when drinking the beer. It is a medium to light bodied beer with a bitter end and lingering tastes of rye.
Coronado Brewing’s take on the Merbear Rye IPA has an almost floral aroma to it, along with a fruity, aromatic nose that is balanced with a more subtle hop aroma. Flavors of caramel and malty sweetness can be noted, in addition to the the hops and fruity goodness. This light-bodied IPA is sweet and easy to drink with a nice, crisp finish at the end.
Both brewer’s take on the Merbear IPA were fantastic, and are great to try side-by-side. This special collaboration also reminds us how much of a craft brewing is. The two brewing companies used the same grains, but coupled them with different hops and brewed them at slightly different temperatures. The end result are two delicious IPAs with a slight, but noticeable, variance. It just shows that every little detail is important when it comes to brewing craft beer!
For the release of the Merbear Rye IPA, Bear Republic and Coronado Brewing came together to host dual-tap takeovers with the brewers and owners on site. One of the release events happened at Fathom Bistro here in San Diego. Since the event took place from 5-7 PM, we enjoyed tasting each of the brews side by side and the amazing view of the San Diego skyline and sunset. It was a great event to be at and a fantastic way to start off the weekend.
