Humans are intriguing beings with their exchange of currency to obtain goods. As this alien transitions into a human identity, obtaining currency without blowing an alien past becomes a difficult task. Unfortunately, at times, a good amount of currency is required to obtain craft beer. It is definitely worth the cost, but sometimes sustaining craft habits can strain the wallet. Also, you do not want to get your friend in trouble for giving you too much free beer at work.
So here is a guide for San Diegans to enjoy the wonders of the local craft beer scene without regret of breaking the bank.
Quantum Brewing: The fairy new brewery, located in Kearny Mesa, is brewing beers in a place your cool college physics professor would probably hang out. Coupon app, Groupon, is selling specials for Quantum Brewing as well. For $14 through Groupon you can snag two flights for you and a buddy and also receive two pint glasses to add to the glassware collection. It is a cheap chance to try out a new brewery and enjoy their delicious Pale’s Constant Pale Ale and Project 37 Cappuccino Brown Ale. Plus tasters are only $1.50 if there is something else you want to try. But hurry since Groupons are available on a limited basis and expire after a period.
Coronado Brewing Co. Tasting Room: Coronado Brewing Co. continues to serve up some awesome beer and even better prices at their tasting room in Bay Park. Regular prices are cheaper than most breweries in San Diego and happy hour helps one save a few more bucks. 1-6pm during weekdays gets you a dollar off pints and $8 64oz growler fills of their core beers. You are going to need all the savings you can get if you want to get through all the beer they offer.
Mission Brewing: Mission Brewing is also serving up steals through Groupon. This is a cheap chance to enjoy a multiple-award winning San Diego brewery. They have a range of deals including tours, tastings, and a gift box. $25 can get you 4 32oz can box set that includes Shipwrecked Double IPA, Mission IPA, El Conquistador Session IPA, and a Cortez Cold Belgian Blonde plus two pint glasses. Box set can also make for a great gift for a beer lover (just saying). They are also offering a variety of tasting and tour options that come with a pint glass to take home. It would basically come down to $8 a person regardless of tour package. However those are selling quickly.
Karl Strauss: One of San Diego’s original craft brewers, the folks at Karl Strauss also have a few specials in their pockets. Most of their restaurants feature $4 pints and flights at their various restaurant locations during evening happy hours. Every Friday, their tasting room also has $8 core beer growler fills with a password that they share through their social media accounts. No better feeling than enjoying a Peanut Butter Cup Porter and knowing you saved a couple bucks while at it.
Balboa’s Tap House: Located in an area of Clairemont known notoriously for its traffic and stressed-out shoppers, Balboa’s Tap House serves as the spot for locals to enjoy a nice break from the stress (a beer sounds nice after the visit to the DMV next door). The hole-in-the-wall taproom features a rotating line up of 32 craft beers on tap from around the nation and a diverse bottle selection as well. Monday are known as Hoppy Mondays and feature a 1pm-11pm $4 pint/$15 pitchers special on almost every beer on draft. Balboa’s Tap House is also known for dishing out random specials on any given day like pitcher/pint specials or specials on certain beers, styles, or breweries. They have an Instagram account (@balboas_tap_house) where they show any upcoming specials and new beers they are tapping.
This is the first entry into a ongoing series where Mario will attempt to acquire as many craft beer deals around the Galaxy as possible.
