I had heard about this small brewery near my residence called Benchmark Brewing Company. This is nestled down in the Grantville neighborhood in San Diego City right near Highway 8 and I-15. It’s located in a quiet industrial park on Fairmount Avenue. I parked my car and walked in and was immediately impressed with it’s décor. The inside had a rustic, wood feel with lots of art on the walls. There are plenty of benches, tables and chairs for you to relax while enjoying the beer. I proceeded to the tasting bar and noticed there were only about 8 beers but as you should know, it’s not about quantity. I did bring a Societe Brewing growler and placed masking tape over the branding, as I had heard Benchmark Brewing will fill it, as they have an ABC approved tag. I was immediately greeted by co-owner Jim Akin who asked me what I would have. I told him it was my first visit there and he shook my hand and asked me what type of beers I like. “All types”, I jested and he then poured me a glass of their double IPA. Jim informed me that Benchmark Brewing Company is a family operation where Jim’s son Matt Akin is the head brewer and he previously brewed at AleSmith Brewing. I asked about the décor and Jim said his daughter Rachael is an interior designer and designed the entire interior. I ended up taking home a growler of their Wee Heavy that sits at 8.5% ABV and has a purely malty profile.
The beer was delicious and they have the license to pour pints as well as tasters and flights. The staff was friendly and had a nice atmosphere. Probably my favorite part is they fill growlers from other breweries! Just keep in mind that you need to cover up the branding. See their growler policy for more information. I do hope more breweries go in this direction. I already own too many growlers as it is and eventually, I will probably just start going to breweries who have the policy to fill any growler.
