San Diego Beer Week is here and it is here in full force. It is okay to be overwhelmed. You wish your body, wallet, and responsibilities would cooperate with your Beer Week desires. Do not worry; we aliens faced the same problem. This is what we did to help out with that. We retreated to the Taproom in Pacific Beach to enjoy a couple of beers while we settled our plans.
The Taproom finds itself hosting a variety of breweries each day during Beer Week. Tuesday played host to Green Flash, Ballast Point, and Alpine Beers where this alien here found himself enjoying special releases from each of the breweries. Ballast Point brought a few aged and specials casks alongside kegs of different takes of their releases. The Even Keel session IPA with Mango found itself adding a citrusy and creamy finish to the light IPA, while the Grunion with Passion Fruit adds a fruity sweet finish that compliments the vibrant hoppy finish of Grunion. The Dorado with Watermelon was a surprise because there is a clear watermelon after-taste despite the strong and bitter taste of the Dorado. However, Alpine Beers brought a few IPAs and they definitely turned heads at the Taproom. The Bad Boy double IPA was a hoppy mess that hit hard with an initial piney taste but then soothed down with a smooth and citrus after-taste. Definitely a highlight of the night. The other highlight Alpine had to offer was the H.F.S (Holy F*&% S***) IPA and it lived quite to its name. The HFS was an amazingly balanced IPA the showcased it great use of Simcoe and Mosaic hops that is a must-try for any hop heads and west coast IPA fans.
What made Taproom a great place for the take-overs is that it is a place that brings in a variety of people. During my time there, I found regulars, beer week goers, and Charger fans (Monday Night Football) all enjoying the releases the three breweries had to offer. Found regulars who cannot get enough of the H.F.S and craft beer veterans openly engaging with people not so familiar with the breweries. Lastly, the Taproom is a mellow place to peacefully your flight of beer. You can sit by the bar and enjoy some chit-chat with a regular or find a corner and not converse with the rest of the galaxy. If you want to enjoy the greatness of San Diego Beer Week but are not into the highly extravagant festivities, then the Taproom Take-overs is the event for you. It also helps that they have epic breweries coming in for the upcoming week. You can find the list of breweries and dates right here.
