I headed out to Petco Park to see the Padres opening night. Of course, I met up with friends at The Tilted Kilt, sucked down some Ballast Point Sculpin IPAs then headed to the Park. I had read in sandiego.eater.com that Stone Brewing Co. was opening a tap room adjacent to Petco Park in the East Village neighborhood of San Diego. When I entered the gates of Petco Park, I walked through the open area known as the “Park in the Park” and saw the Stone Tasting Room! I walk towards it to look closer, but it was behind a huge iron fence. In order for me to go in, I would have to exit the park and walk around the fence and enter the tasting room. This was a bummer because I didn’t want to leave, get a hand stamp, then wait in line to go back to the game.
After a very exciting win over those Bums (Dodgers), I made my way over to the Stone Tasting Room to check it out. Unfortunately by this time, it was too dark to take photos of the outside, but you can see more photos at the eater.com link above. This was very nice on the inside with lots of old wood, artsy iron and sheet metal work, and of course, a thick black granite bar counter top. There was a nice bottle refrigerator stocked with Enjoy By 04.20.14. The place is dimly lit with golden chandelier lighting and has a classy downtown feel. This is much different from the Company Store in South Park, where it’s a bit more basic and not much seating.
I was not hungry as I had a big meal at The Tilted Kilt but the menu looked like it was mostly flatbreads and deserts. I did enjoy a Ruination IPA and an Oaked Arrogant Bastard Ale. The service was very friendly and helpful. Since my friends from the game had left already, I quickly made friends with a nice couple and had an interesting conversation about Star Trek and Stargate SG-1.
The one thing I was disappointed in is that they closed at 9pm. I know it was a Sunday, but still… it was the first Padre game of the season! I will surely be back but I hope they adjust their hours accordingly during Padres games. It seems like they are missing out on some cash by closing early.
This will be a great place to visit if you are in the area, or if you live nearby, fill up growlers with beer. Take in a few beers before the ballgame and enjoy the cheap beer prices before you go watch the game. Go Padres!
