California-based reggae band Rebelution has partnered with Tampa’s Rock Brothers Brewing to create “Rebelution IPA,” which will debut June 25th at the band’s appearance in St. Petersburg’s Vinoy Park.
Rock Brothers Brewing has been creating craft beers for the past three years with rock bands including Have Gun Will Travel, JJ Grey & Mofro, Hootie & the Blowfish, Umphrey’s McGee, 311 and now Rebelution.
“We’ve had a bad ass time creating beers with our favorite artists over the last few years,” said Rock Brothers founder Kevin Lilly. “Rebelution came to us through our mutual friend Vincent Jackson of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and it was an instant friendship on all levels. The band is as stoked about craft beer as any beer connoisseur or brewer would be. They have been drinking local craft since the early days of Cali IPAs and we love that they care as much about the music and beer industry as we do,” Lilly added.
After several meetings and tasting sessions with Rebelution it became clear the band wanted to recreate the essence of a SoCal IPA, explained Lilly, who is intimately involved with the flavor-profile-process that occurs between band members and brew masters. “They grew up drinking and appreciating IPAs,” he said.
According to Rock Brothers newly-appointed Head Brewer, Eric “The Brewer” Wannemacher, “Rebelution IPA is the perfect harmony of ingredients. The pilsner and rye malts provide a crisp, refreshing and dry finish, while the fuggles and mosaic hops bring the tropical citrus and dense herb characteristics.”
The beer comes in at 7.5% ABV with 41 IBUs, and Wannemacher believes it will be a big hit with both fans of the band and craft beer enthusiasts in general.
“Craft beer and music go hand in hand,” said Rebelution keyboardist Rory Carey. “I was home brewing in college when the band formed in 2004, so quality beer and tunes have been passions of mine for a while. I can’t wait to share them both with everyone on a much bigger scale!”
Rebelution band members have been involved in each stage of development – from selecting the style, to influencing the taste, to creating the name and the accompanying artwork.
While Rock Brothers Brewing is based in Tampa, home to award-winning Cigar City Brewing with whom Rock Brothers partners on all its band brews, Rebelution IPA is the first beer that Rock Brothers has designed primarily on its own, with the help of their recently appointed head brewer, Eric Wannemacher.
“Eric has been under the careful tutelage of Cigar City Brewing for the last year or so and has proven himself as a more than competent brewer,” said Rock Brothers Brewing co-founder Tony Casoria. “We are proud to welcome him to the Rock Brothers family.”
Fans will get their first tasting opportunity at Rebelution’s next tour stop in the Tampa Bay area on June 25 in Vinoy Park.
“I doubt this first release will be our last with Rock Brothers,” explained drummer Wesley Finley. Adding, “we’re also into barrel-aged beers and sours, so I’m sure we’ll delve into something more complex as a specialty beer offering in the future.”
Rebelution is the second west coast artist to partner with Rock Brothers, following the success of 311 Amber Ale. Rock Brothers expects both brands to be available in California later this year.
