What a magical word…Hooloomooloo. According to the the label, the name “Hooloomooloo” is derived from Herman Melville’s first work of fiction, the name of a fantasy island populated by exiles.
Modern Times Hooloomooloo
Appearance: Clear as day with a thick white foamy head that reduced into a thin white blanket of foam that stayed with the beer until finished.
Aroma: Big mango up front with some mandarin orange coming through, you get a hint of alcohol at the back end with some sweet malts notes.
Taste: Damn, this beer is boozy. We had it on tap at the Modern Times Fermentorium and we didn’t receive as much of an alcohol presence as we did when we popped a bottle of it the next day. Big bitter hops dominate with tropical fruits flowing and a slight resinous pine flavor coming in. Nice sweet maltiness attempts to balance out this beer but is ultimately lost among the hop profile.
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a crisp dry finish.
Overall: If you’re going to drink this beer we suggest you do so on tap because it was much more appealing straight from the keg. The bottle we had was a bit harsh in flavor but still a good double IPA. If you love big bitter IPAs this is the beer for you.
