Here comes another awesome brew from arguable San Diego’s oldest brewery. The Mission Brewing brand began in 1913 but was put on hiatus when prohibition began in 1920. It was not until 2007 that the brand was revived. It has since blossomed into one of San Diego’s most successful breweries and most recently taken over the historic Wonder Bread factory in downtown San Diego. Check out their new spot and pick up a crowler of Shipwrecked! What is a crowler you say? It is essentially a growler can but instead of 64 ounces crowlers come in 32 ounces. An easier method of transporting beer where you don’t have to worry about broken glass or beer going flat. Cheers!!
Appearance: The Shipwrecked pours a light amber to deep golden color with a small creamy head which leaves nice spiderweb lacing on the glass as you enjoy
Aroma: Nice hoppy and malty aroma. Nothing crazy or overpowering here, just enough to know its there.
Taste: Hoppy bite at first which settles into a nice smooth malty backbone. The hoppy kick comes from the Cascade, CTZ, and Centennial hops and the malty flavor on the back end is refreshing, not typical for a double IPA.
Mouthfeel: The light to moderate level of carbonation helps the drink-ability of this brew. Not a light beer by any means but easier to drink and less harsh bitterness than other double IPAs.
Overall: This is a great take on the double IPA. Really solid mixture of hop strains gives you the hoppy kick you desire from a double with the malt acting as a great balance evening the brew out. With an ABV of 9.25% this is a strong one and may not be for everyone, but for those of you who cant get enough hops definitely give this a try! Also, the convenience of a crowler makes this ideal to take to your next social gathering and share with friends. Cheers!!
