IMG_8074Last night the Aliens attended a VIP event at San Diego’s Mission Brewery. They were showing off their brewery and brand new event space, the Mission Cellar & Loft downtown, and launching their NEW Plunder IPA. Mission Brewery really pulled out all the stops to make this event a huge success. We walked in and suddenly felt like we were transported into Pirates of the Caribbean. With a giant rustic wooden wall, and the place decked out in pirate booty gold, we felt like we could be aboard the Black Pearl (yes, we’re huge fans). Now, what we really loved was how they got creative with the free beers. We were each given 2 gold coins as vouchers for free pints from their full draft menu, and a free taster goblet for unlimited pours of their new release, the Plunder IPA. In addition, we took part in a pirate-garb photo shoot and got to spin the wheel of fortune to get free prizes (and won more beer coins and keychains, success!).

The event space itself was really unique, and had previously been an architectural studio. From the upper level, you you could see down into the floor below. We also enjoyed looking out at the city on the upper level open-air lookout (which sort of felt like being on the bow of a pirate ship?) and listening to the DJ rock some sweet tunes. It’s a very cool place, with exposed brick on one wall and wood on the other, plus lots of rustic chic metal accents, like railings and hanging ceiling lights. This place has mission brewery written all over it. Well done, guys!

IMG_8069Next up, the beer! Here were our top picks of the evening:

Plunder IPA: We enjoyed sipping this new release from Mission Brewery. With a light citrusy hop aroma, a strong malt backbone, and flavor notes of grapefruit and lemon, it was the perfect beer to start off the evening. We will be returning for more!

Coffee IPA: If you’re a fan of coffee beers like we are, you MUST get your hands on this ridiculously amazing smelling coffee IPA. Smells just like fresh brewed coffee, with a surprisingly hoppy taste profile.

Dark Seas: This Russian Imperial Stout will enliven the senses, with tons of roasted malty flavor and a warming alcohol effect. Enough said. This is definitely a beer worth savoring!

All in all, we had a blast at this pirate-themed affair with the awesome folks over at Mission Brewery. Their attention to detail doesn’t just go for their parties they throw, but their beer also has that same level of craftsmanship and creativity. We’ll be back soon for some more tasty brews, so keep an eye out on our social for some newfound favorites.

A big thank you to Melissa over at Mission for getting us access to this pirate-VIP madness! Check out some more photos below.
