Lonely Planet, Fieldwork Brewing & Northern Monk launch international IPA, Travel Notes

The global beer scene has never been more exciting and beer tourism is on the rise. For many travelers, tasting local beer is an essential part of experiencing a place.

That’s why travel media company Lonely Planet teamed up with two of the most acclaimed breweries on both sides of the Atlantic to introduce a limited edition beer, Travel Notes, inspired by the passion and innovation at the heart of the craft beer revolution.

Renowned craft breweries Fieldwork Brewing in Berkeley, CA and Northern Monk Brew Co. in Leeds, UK – both featured in the new book, Lonely Planet’s Global Beer Tour (Lonely Planet Food / $19.99 / May 16, 2017) – joined forces to develop Travel Notes, a truly international IPA.

Featuring five ingredients sourced (malted barley, wheat hops, yeast, mangoes and açaí berries) from five continents, Travel Notes is a floral, fruity IPA that showcases a world of extraordinary flavor. Lonely Planet’s Global Beer Tour, a beer travel and tasting guide, explores the vibrant world of craft beer in 32 countries, from San Diego to South Africa.

“With Global Beer Tour, we wanted to help travelers discover beer at its best – direct from the source at great breweries,” said Megan Eaves, destination editor at Lonely Planet. “We were so inspired that we wanted to celebrate how beer brings people together across the world – by bringing the world together in one beer.  We were thrilled to be able to work with two world-class breweries to make it happen.”

Here is a sample from the book.

“The global beer scene is more exciting than ever right now; you have places making beer that had never been brewing before, and you have places making great beer that previously only had fairly poor quality beer to choose from,” said Alex Tweet, owner and head brewer at Fieldwork. “Traveling to other breweries and experiencing the beers from outside your local market is the best way to increase your abilities as a brewer. It was great getting to witness how Northern Monk executed our beer, and hopefully our differences in technique can yield two unique yet similarly great beers.”
“At Northern Monk, we draw inspiration from thousands of years of brewing heritage and look at how we move forward by using ingredients and techniques from across the world,” said Russell Bisset, Director at Northern Monk Brew Co. “This project embodies that ethos perfectly by using ingredients from different continents to create a beer inspired by the world.”

“We are keen travelers with many of the team here finding a love of beer as a result of beer experiences from trips across the world. When the opportunity to work with Lonely Planet arose, we jumped at the chance. Developing the recipe in conjunction with the team at Fieldwork and Lonely Planet was a real meeting of minds and the resulting beer should be truly unique.”

Travel Notes will be available in select locations across Northern California, the UK and Europe.

Featuring breweries in 32 countries across five continents, Lonely Planet’s Global Beer Tour (Lonely Planet Food / $19.99 / May 16, 2017) explores the vibrant world of craft beer around the world, from San Diego to South Africa.
