Lightning Brewery: Thunderweizen Ale Review
4.4Overall Score
Reader Rating: (0 Votes)

Lightning Brewery is located in Poway and is going into its 10th year as “a leader in lager and German beer styles with over 40 nationally recognized gold, silver, and bronze medals earned in competition.” Their motto is:

“Better beer through science.”

We got our long fingers on their Thunderweizen Ale and it certainly did not disappoint!

ABV: 5.8%

Appearance: This beer appears as golden and dark in color, very hazy, with no head at all.

Aroma: It is easy to identify a strong bready smell, classic to a hefeweizen. There is also an indistinct yet subtle fruit scent.

Taste: The Thunderweizen has a creamy wheat flavoring with just a tad bit of spiciness on the back end.

Mouthfeel: This beer is smooth! It is refreshing even though it is a little heavier on the palette. The medium carbonation isn’t overwhelming and the dash of spice in the flavor adds to the refreshing aspect of the beer.

Overall: This beer an easy choice to grab off the shelves when you’re looking for classic hefeweizen. It works great as a delicious beer to wash down some pizza or even a yummy plate of fettuccine alfredo. With that dash of spiciness it cuts out all the nonsense of other flavors. Thunderweizen is also an easy choice when it comes introducing a new craft beer lover to a hefeweizen or it would be great to cool down on warm day!
