Karl Strauss Brewing Company’s final Arts & Amps event of the summer, coming up on Saturday, August 29th from 5 to 8 p.m. at Karl Strauss’ main tasting room in Pacific Beach (5985 Santa Fe Street). This year marked the first year of the Arts & Amps event series, which took over where KARL’s B.A.M. series left off, and it has turned out to be a summer event series not to miss, combining  live music with local beer and art for a laid-back, cultured evening al fresco. Karl Strauss is surely San Diego’s craft beer pioneer (brewing since ’89), and since the early beginnings the company has been invested in the local artistic community, combining their passion with brewing beer with initiatives that support local music and art.

It wouldn’t be a KARL event without beer, and the featured beer of the evening will be Deux Amis (French for “Two Friends”), a unique collaboration with Monkey Paw Brewing, one of Karl Strauss’ oldest friends in the industry. A beer five years in the making, this barrel-aged wild ale is the perfect marriage of two complex and wild/funky beers: a strong ale aged for three years in French Boudreaux barrels by Monkey Paw and a sour from KARL aged for two years in American oak barrels. After careful blending with both teams, KARL was able to create a complex yet delightful beer that starts off with a wonderful nose that features, oak and wine-like aromas with a complex fruitiness. In addition to trying pours from the lineup of Karl Strauss’ core and special releases, there will be food available for purchase from Cohn Restaurant Group food trucks Ms. Patty Melt and Chop Sooey.

Arts and Amps

For the final installment, local blues/rock band Little Hurricane will perform in the outdoor area of the biergarten-style tasting room. The two-piece band might be local, but their influence is big: they have a combined following of over 30K followers on their social media channels and will be touring internationally this fall with the band July Talk. DJ OMZ will also be spinning before and after Little Hurricane’s set.

To complement the music, the event will also feature an art show curated by Thumbprint Gallery, the La Jolla-based gallery that specializes in urban art and pop surrealism. The gallery has been given full freedom to showcase the work of over 20 local artists at a pop-up art show within the tasting room, and participating artists include Paul Vargas, Victor Villa and Kristen Palumbo.

Arts & Amps is a part of Karl Strauss’ overall initiative to create community through freshly brewed beer while supporting local arts and culture. To make it inclusive to the entire community, these events are FREE, and open to anyone 21+.
