“What could be up here?” I wondered while cruising around La Mesa in the mini-alien pod? After circling around a few times, I realized there was a cool brewery tucked in a small one-way industrial street called Helix Brewing Company, located at 8101 Commercial Street, La Mesa, CA 91942.
This brewery is in a red-brick brown-trimmed building, with a rusty looking sign facing the street and wrought-iron lamps just under the sign. The entrance is around the side and at the back, where you feel like you’re at some sort of a blacksmith’s workshop, decorated with bales of straw and barrel-shaped planters with ivy sprawling upward from them. The outdoor courtyard features a variety of sizes of tables and seating, including a few tables for two made out of barrels.
The beer menu featured nearly a dozen varieties, this alien decided to choose a flight of four tasters which were all outstanding in each style: Praguenosis Czech Lager 5.5%, Galaxy Rye IPA 6.4%, Mosaic-O-Holic Double IPA 7.5%, and Honor Not Inner Oatmeal Stout 5.8%.
Although each style was like its own little celebration in a taster glass that day, it was the hazy tropical Galaxy Rye IPA that made it into the growler and came back to the mother ship for further sampling! A super friendly, relaxed casual atmosphere at this place topped off an ideal mid-week afternoon.
Helix Brewing Co.’s hours are Monday-Thursday 3pm-9pm, Friday & Saturday 12pm-10pm, and Sunday 12pm-7pm. I hear you can catch some great local live music there as well on Friday & Saturday evenings at 6pm. For more about Helix, visit their website and social media here:
