Combine 1 part successful businessman, 1 part personal trainer and a dash of Mediterranean inspiration into a shaker and pour over ice. What do you get? The recipe for Azzurre Spirits, the Las Vegas based gin and vodka brand that’ll make you consider heading down to Sin City for a bottle or two.

Founded by father-daughter duo, Dan and Angela Pettit, Azzurre is doing something different in the big booming world of craft spirits.

Let’s start with the vodka, my favorite. Quite possibly the smoothest vodka this side of the western hemisphere, the Pettits have come up with a proprietary blend of apples, grapes and sugar cane, which makes the spirit TOTALLY different from other vodkas made with corn and grain. According to Mr. Pettit, vodkas made with corn and grain are harsh to our precious palettes (probably why we all look like the grimacing face emoji after taking a shot) and have to be distilled up to 30 times to combat that harshness. Azzurre only takes a few distillations to get a refined smoothness – not to mention, the grapes and apple give off a tropical hint. What more could you want!?

On to the Gin, which I am currently drinking as I type. It’s important to keep in mind that I am not a gin drinker.  Not in the sense that I don’t like gin, because I genuinely have an appreciation for every type of alcohol there is, but gin may be my least familiar spirit. And now I am afraid that most gins may be ruined for me after experiencing the almost savoriness that is Azzurre Gin. Traditional gin usually has an overpowering juniper flavor that contributes to its signature flavor, but Azzurre’s blend of tangerine, grapefruit, ginger, rose petals and basil tones down the juniper and replaces it with a peppery flavor. If you like bloody marys or refreshing cucumber cocktails in the midst of summer (and spring) this is your gin.

To no surprise, both the vodka and gin have earned a ton of awards – the Gold Medal Craft Spirits Award in 2014, the 2014 Gold Medal Beverly Hills International Spirits Award, a Gold Medal in the “Best Domestic Vodka” in 2015, a Silver Medal at the WSWA 2015 tasting competition and the 2016 Gold Medal in the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, among many others.

If you’re craving some Azzurre after reading this (let’s be real, you are) you may want to plan a trip to Vegas with lots of room in your trunk, because right now that is the only place you can find the spirit. PS… below is my absolute favorite cocktail, the Green Fairy, made with Azzurre Gin, created by Southern Wine and Spirits’ Mixologist, Michael Przydzial:

  • 2 oz. Azzurre Gin
  • 1 oz. Wilks & Wilson Lime/Mint Syrup
  • 1 oz. Fresh Lime Juice
  • Topped with 3-4 oz. of Mr. Q Cucumber soda

While I am from California, my cocktail and beer experience started while living in Las Vegas a few years ago. While living in the entertainment capital of the world, I have “studied” my fair share of cocktails and brews and am ready to explore what the rest of the world has to offer. Whiskey-ginger is my go-to, but everything in between is nice too
