Whether if you have read the lengthy novels or been a fan of the highly in-depth TV show Game of Thrones is a force to reckon with. Now mix Game of Thrones, HBO and Ommegang Brewery (Cooperstown, NY) and you have a deadly concoction of lust, drink and pure pleasure. When Ommegang first announced their original Iron Throne blonde ale which touted delicious lemon peel and grains of paradise, fans needless to say, were ecstatic. Then Ommegang went and did it again with Take the Black Stout which was deeply rooted in the Great White North filtering in Star Anise and Licorice Root. So when they then announced Fire and Blood a Red Ale inspired by Daenerys Targaryen’s three dragons with Ancho Chilies let’s just say Westoros nearly crumbled.
Sorry for being so nerdy, humans but this Alien is obsessed with the tv show. Sex, scandal, swords and what more could an Alien ask for. We started our night by finding a quaint parking spot for the saucer to sit in in a town called Pacific Beach, at the local tap house SD Tap Room (www.SDtaproom.com). Then we gathered intel from those in line, a fan of Ommegang George Parry, “ I know Ommegang makes a great product..” and when asked who would reign the Iron Throne he said “I’d like to see Jon Snow.” Although this Alien disagrees he isn’t wrong. Ommegang does make a great product and that was evident in the Fire and Blood Red Ale. As fans began to filter through the tap room receiving goodie bags filled with fun Game of Thrones and Ommegang swag they were greeted by Daenerys and Jon Snow themselves.
Once poured Fire and Blood has a beautiful red hue, reminiscent of Sansa Starks hair or the fire off of a dragon. Steve Hamilton of Ommegang Brewery was at the event to support the pre-release of Fire and Blood, he was able to explain that the Ancho Chilies are “an element of fire supposed to give a slightly peppery and spicy taste at the end, it is a Targaryen beer so it needed a fiery element at the end.” Now while Steve explained the ancho chillies our taste of this beer didn’t have much kick to it. The slight hints of pepper were strong and some smokiness. Then again, Alien tastebuds for spice are set a bit higher than most. A red ale with a sweet malty finish and beautiful coloring. This beer finished tastefully, easily a beer to grab while watching the premiere of Game of Thrones. Head of this beer was thin with mild suds and minor carbonation, but bold hops and malts that really tied them all together.
Although the website for Fire and Blood asks for some beef and spicy foods this Alien enjoyed pizza and it was a perfect accompaniment. The night wasn’t over yet as we continued to speak with Steve Hamilton, who gave us interesting intel about the 4th Game of Thrones beer. Steve states that the fourth beer will be an unspiced double called “Valar Morghulis“ which is High Valyrian for “All Men Must Die,” the tagline for this seasons Game of Thrones premiere.
The night was finished with a quick encounter from Brian Hackler the Market Manager for Brewery Ommegang in San Diego , “when this opportunity came to Brewery Ommegang it was a huge opportunity for us to elevate our core brands and to gain awareness for our brewery this event in particular is one of 10 nationwide pre-release events. So between this Wednesday and this Sunday we are giving true Game of Thrones and Ommegang Fans their first taste of Fire and Blood. Before it’s release on March 31st.” After speaking with Brian some lucky fans went home with amazing raffle prizes varying from copies of the first and second seasons of Game of Thrones on DVD, Daenery’s Targaryens replica dragon eggs and a printed version of the dragon label that adorns the bottle of Fire and Blood.
All in all this event was amazing, and we Aliens couldn’t be more thankful for the opportunity to meet such amazing and fun people. Remember Fire and Blood releases nationwide on March 31st and Game of Thrones Season 4 premieres April 6th on HBO.
