It’s no secret that in the winter months in places like San Diego and Florida, you can find us sipping on stouts, porters and wee heavy’s to create that feeling of “brrrrr…winter!”, even if it is a comfortable 70 degrees outside. Some of us even turn the AC on just to make these beers that much more enjoyable (guilty). We’d argue that this beer can stand alone, hot or cold temps and still take your breath away. However, it was created by Funky Buddha with that “winter wonderland” feeling in mind, to be enjoyed when you need something warm and comforting — like a cozy blanket.

Appearance: Pours with an almost nonexistent light brown head, which we thought was disappointing at first. However, it  goes down smooth as silk because of the lower carbonation, so we didn’t miss it much.

Aroma: The intense aroma of chocolate, cocoa and vanilla bean overwhelm the senses. We wonder how they were able to create such an inciting and powerful nose. It’s bursting with freshly brewed coffee notes, some candy-like caramel sweetness, and a comforting coconut essence. We could just smell this beer all evening and be completely satisfied.

Taste: Upfront we got the sweet chocolatey flavors with some more subtle flavors of coconut and just a hint of vanilla bean. It’s sweater at the beginning, but the finish is drier. A fresh coffee bitterness lingers on the pallet making it more tolerable for even the non “sweet beer” drinkers. That coffee finish prepares you for another sip to get those creamy, gooey cake flavors back in your mouth. Much like eating a slice of cake and having your coffee on the side! Just as “everything in moderation” applies with dessert, it goes for this beer too. It’s definitely designed to be sipped and savored.

Mouthfeel: This beer has a medium-low carbonation which gives it a creamy silky smooth texture. Slightly syrupy, this porter coats your mouth and gives all the flavors a chance to shine and linger on your palette.

Overall: This beer is a cozy blanket. Warm up with with this vanilla and coconut scented (no, not candle) beer, and sip the warming fresh-brewed-coffee goodness. It’ll provide you instant comfort on a cold day, and substitute for your afternoon cup of joe and chocolate cake. It really is that good.

This beer was officially released on Feb.15th, 2015, $9.99 per bottle with a limit of 4 per person.

A big thank you to Funky Buddha for sending us some beer to try out, keep an eye our for a review on their Iron & Barleywine!
