Being an alien that enjoys both beer and heavy metal music, I was very excited about this special event at Toronado. This event was very unique, and let me tell you why. Gino Fontana is the bass player in the band Eukaryst, but he’s also a brewer at Pizza Port in Ocean Beach. What a dream job! Gino has designed an Imperial Stout that you can sometimes find only at Pizza Port Ocean Beach called Eukaryst Sinister Imperial Oatmeal Stout. This is a bold beer filled with chocolate and smokey notes and ringing in at a high 11% ABV. Well, this event was special because not only did they have the Eukaryst Stout, but they had the bourbon barrel aged version, aged on cocoa nibs! Not only that, but it was only $5 for a 8 ounce glass! Holy shit! This beer is incredible!
I met Gino and the rest of the Eukaryst band. I also ran into some members of other metal bands including Cattle Decapitation and Ruins ov Abaddon. It was like being at an Exodus show, only with much better beer. After first trying the Barrel Aged Eukaryst, I asked Gino for a suggestion for something else from the OB Pizza Port. He recommended the Jetty IPA, also brewed exclusively by Pizza Port Ocean Beach. I took his suggestion, and got the pint, at the slick deal of $5 and took it back to my table for analysis. Wow! I was really amazed! This was a delicious west coast IPA using mostly Simcoe and Amarillo hops. This gave it incredible grapefruit and pine aromas and flavor. It finished very clean with no sticky mouth feel or lock-jaw bitterness. I would compare it to the classic Pliny the Elder by Russian River. Bold statement? Yes. But try it for yourself and let me know what you think.
More metalheads started pouring into Toronado and the new Eukaryst album was actually in the jukebox and it was played, loudly, for all to enjoy. This was a unique experience that combined two of my favorite things… beer and metal…. and I hope to attend more events like this… even if I have to be the one to organize them.
