In the mood for some awesome craft beer and great atmosphere? Then look no further than Duck Foot Brewing! Located in Beeramar (Miramar), this relatively new member of the San Diego Craft Beer community is about to celebrate its first anniversary and has just started bottling some of their flagship brews!

The tasting room itself is located on Kenamar Dr. right down the street from Ballast Point’s new restaurant and a stone’s throw from Alesmith and Saint Archer. On this particular sunny Saturday afternoon we arrived to a delicious taco stand set up outside and were greeted at the door by Sparky, the Duck Foot resident Bichon Frise.

Duck Foot’s layout is very similar to most tasting rooms in the area. The business park style suits it nicely with a few tables scattered about with seating also available at the bar.  On this particular Saturday there was a mild crowd with it slightly picking up as the afternoon went on.  The tasting room itself is decorated with numerous murals and artistic pieces designed by local design firm Madonna+Child.

When Duck Foot came to us and said they were opening their own brewery and tasting room, we knew it was an opportunity to create something truly rad.

Using a pop/street art aesthetic, pairing vintage photography with irreverent additions Duck Foot’s space matches they’re attitude towards beer; Know where you’re coming from but don’t be afraid to get a little weird with it.

The artwork brings a hip but laid back feel to the tasting room, and gives you something awesome to look at while you are enjoying a pint.

The Beer: As soon as we sat down at the bar we were greeted by Suzy, wife of cofounder Brett Goldstock, and we struck up a great conversation.  After some deliberation we decided on a flight of their flagship brews which include The Looker Blonde Ale, Red Ale, Choconut Lust Porter, The Contender IPA and a Double White IPA. We were instantly hooked on the roasty goodness that was the Red Ale and the chocolate hazelnut masterpiece that was the Choconut Lust Porter.  Just when we thought things could not get any better, Suzy then informed us that all of Duck Foot Brewing’s beers are Gluten Reduced! Finally gluten reduced craft beer that is worthy of the name. With an average rating of 10 to 12 PPM as tested by San Diego White Labs, Duck Foot’s beer has less gluten than most gluten free labeled food!

The Verdict: Overall, us Aliens has a great time exploring Duck Foot! While the tasting room is a bit small, its awesome artwork, intimate atmosphere, and great beer are definitely worth the trip. Be on the lookout for some of their upcoming events such as their small batch release party and trivia night! Have someone who is gluten intolerant in your life? Pick up one of their new bottles of the Looker Blonde, Choconut Lust Porter or The Contender IPA! They are also dog friendly so bring your best friend down to meet Sparky and if you run into Suzy be sure to let her know the Aliens sent you!

PR / Marketing Intern

I am a sports fanatic, music lover, outdoor enthusiast and beer advocate born and raised in sunny San Diego, CA. While I am not out exploring San Diego’s craft beer scene, I can be found hanging out at the beach with friends or attending southern California’s many live music events. My passion for craft beer was inherited from my father while home brewing together in their garage. I continued to share his passion for craft beer with friends while attending college in Los Angeles, where I was able to explore the craft beer scene outside of San Diego. In the future, I hope to be involved in Marketing/ Event Planning for the craft beer industry so I can spread my love and passion for beer with the larger San Diego community. I am an avid sports fan and can be seen sharing a pint with other aliens at local Padre and Charger games!
