The San Diego craft beer scene has penetrated the border with the birth of various breweries popping up including one in particular the Cerveceria Insurgente, which you humans may know from their collaboration with Stone Brewing Company and talented homebrewer Chris Banker on the Stone Xocoveza Mocha Stout.
Insurgente La Lupulosa is rightfully translated as The Hoppy One, a west coast style IPA brewed with a butt load of hops, changing everyones perception of Mexican brews being watered down lagers that you have to drown out with lime.
Appearance: Poured a transparent light copper red color with a thick beige colored head that left rings of lacing as we drank it down.
Aroma: Presenting scents of citrus and tropical fruits hit you immediately with a tinge of sweet caramel malts coming in to prepare you for the first sip.
Taste: A wonderfully balanced IPA that doesn’t slap you in the face with hop bitterness like most of their neighbors in San Diego. A medium amount of piney hop bitterness with grapefruit and some light tropical fruit flavors backed by a sweet malt backbone.
Mouthfeel: A medium body with minimal carbonation and a crisp bitter finish, making for a nice easy drinking beer.
Overall: Overall this was a good IPA, a nice change of pace from our traditionally bitter San Diego beers, as it warmed it became a little excessively malt forward that kind of ruined it for the Aliens. Just reminds the Aliens that we need to drink faster! All in all a great beer and we are looking forward to trying more of Insurgent’s beers very soon.
