Boulevard Brewing Company – Love Child No. 6

ABV: 9.2%

Love Child is part of the Smokestack Series of whiskey barrel-aged sours, with each bottling being different than the next. This particular Love Child is number six in the series and is a blend of soured Bourbon Barrel Quad and a Flanders-style sour red aged in previously used whiskey barrels.

Appearance: Pours a clean dark honey orange color with a minimal white head that disappears as soon as it is poured. At first pour this beer is crystal clear but as we reached the end of the bottle the beer poured extremely murky.

Aroma: Upfront is mouthwatering notes of sour apple, fruity notes of grape and lemon followed with a slight tinge of lactobacillus inviting you to take a sip.

Taste: This “sour ale” presents a lot less sour than the aroma would suggest. A definite funky barnyard taste from the brettanomyces, with some oaky/earthy characteristics coming though.

Mouthfeel: Low carbonation created a very soft mouthfeel and a light-medium to medium body. The wild yeasts tingle on the tongue and a drying finish.

Overall: We for sure feel the love for the beer. Extremely easy drinking and doesn’t leave you grabbing for a bottle of tums at the end, as we know some sours can do. Could be one of our favorite love child(ren).

A fine beer may be judged with only one sip, but it's better to be thoroughly sure.
