Boatswain Chocolate Stout Review

As we have come to inhabit this Earth, we aliens have come to love Trader Joe’s, just like a lot of humans do.  As you’re walking through the aisles and make it to the alcohol section you can’t help but peek at the craft beer section. Of course this is the only aisle of extreme importance to us and to our delight a chocolate stout catches our eye! At a Trader Joe’s like price, it’s hard to pass up! Boatswain isn’t an actual brewery but this beer is bottled and brewed by Rhinelander Brewing Co. which is located in Wisconsin. It is mentioned on the bottle that beers are made in unique small batches.

FullSizeRenderABV: 5.4%

IBU: 66

Appearance: At first a thick creamy head is present, but quickly dissipates to a thin lacing around the ring of the glass. The beer is extremely dark, almost black.

Aroma: Not a strong aroma, but has a very subtle bitter chocolate scent.

Taste: This beer carries a punch for a stout. It is bitter and tangy from the hops at first, but lends to a semi-sweet chocolate, cocoa taste, similar to dark chocolate.

Mouthfeel: The medium carbonation matched with its tanginess makes it easy to miss the subtle creaminess brought by the roasted malt. It certainly lingers on your palette.

Overall: This beer can definitely help you satisfy a sweet tooth and it’s a great price. It could definitely be considered a late night dessert “snack”. You could even use this beer in your own version of a alcoholic “float” as well!
