Having only been in the San Diego craft beer scene for three years, Belching Beaver Brewery has definitely made it’s mark in the industry. This past weekend, us aliens joined you humans to help Belching Beaver celebrate their 3rd Anniversary. We crash landed on the sunny patio at their Vista location to learn more about this thing called a luau. The Belching Beaver hosted their 3rd Anniversary Great Lei Luau to celebrate their success thus far with the people who’ve helped them get there, their loyal customers.
The Anniversary party offered a variety of 20 beers on tap, live music, food, chocolate pairings, and raffle prizes of Belching Beaver swag. The luau attracted many spirited fans, many of whom were sporting the traditional luau attire of coconut bras and grass skirts. Tickets to this event included a 13oz Anniversary/Commemorative Glass, four 10oz pours, and one free raffle ticket. The participants who were lucky enough to get their raffle ticket drawn, won awesome Beaver Swag Luau Baskets which contained some items like growlers, logo pint glasses, stickers and other stylish Belching Beaver merchandise. Live music provided by Karlos Paez of the B Side Players and help from the outdoor bar had people grooving on the patio, while enjoying the beautiful San Diego day.
Chocolate pairings by So Rich Chocolates! provided samples of their custom chocolate based on the beer you were drinking. The bold chocolates paired beautifully with their suggestions. I sampled Spicy Peanut Butter made with Ghost Chile, while drinking the Peanut Butter Milk Stout, as well as the Chipotle Toffee with The Mayor, a Scotch Ale. The unique chocolate brought out different flavor profiles of the beer, and complimented each other quite nicely. Additional food, by GrillFellas and a sushi bus, was available to provide some substance to a beer-filled afternoon as well.
Belching Beaver had a number of tasty beers on tap, including some of their classics like the Peanut Butter Milk Stout, Me So Honey, and Hop Highway. Also accompanied by some new beers and special releases.
A few of their new beers included Chronicles of Gnarlia (Wet Hop IPA), Double Doozey (Double IPA), and The Mayor on Nitro (Scotch Ale).
We got our long fingers on a number of delicious brews while enjoying the luau but here were a few of our favorites…
- Barrel Aged Horchata ABV: 8% Horchata Imperial Milk Stout (aged in Bourbon Maple Barrel).
- Cask Sweet Melons ABV 5.5% Watermelon with basil and honey. Mildly sweet and very refreshing.
- Ol’ Dirty Barrel aka the ‘ODB’ ABV: 10.3% Barrel aged Russian Imperial Stout. They tapped one keg of this 1st anniversary beer and we were lucky enough to get a taste.
- The Mayor on Nitro ABV 8.5% Scotch Ale with coffee, vanilla and maple. (Collaboration with Scott Obermayer) This new release was my favorite beer of the afternoon, velvety smooth with a strong sweet, coffee taste.
And we obviously couldn’t miss getting a taster of the Great Lei IPA since we were at the Great Lei Luau after all. The coconut and pineapple flavor reflected the paradisal environment perfectly.
The 3rd Anniversary Great Lei Luau was a huge success! As the afternoon progressed, the brewery filled with more and more Belching Beaver supporters. Talking with Belching Beaver Director of Sales, Marc Truex, who has been there since the beginning; he was sharing how fun it’s been to see the company grow and become a more recognized brand. They still have a vision they’re working towards to continue their growth. With plans to open their next location in Oceanside, as well as some cool barrel-aged projects in the works, Belching Beaver Brewing has a lot to look forward to!
