Home brewing popularity has grown in recent years, probably partially due to the explosion of craft beer varieties now on the market. BEER BREWING FOR EVERYONE is a book that fits right in to this growing market. It gains its credibility through the 80 home brewing sessions undertaken by the author, Michael Hlatky. If you are toying with the idea of home brewing or have been home brewing for some time, this book is a useful reference.

Beer Brewing For Everyone

Beer Brewing For Everyone, Written by Michael Hlatky and Published by Schiffer Publishing

BEER BREWING FOR EVERYONE is beautifully illustrated and teaches step-by-step how to brew your own beer. From putting your brewing equipment together down to step by step instructions on the brewing process. The union of the illustrations and steps compliment each other in an easy-to-follow experience.

NOTE: The paragraph below may only be relevant to the reviewer.

Before I brewed my own beer for the first time, I participated in a home brew session with friends that had experience. This helped ease my fears some and gave me an idea of what the process entailed. I can see how this book could equally help ease the fears of newcomers and increase the understanding of each step in the brewing process.

One downside for an American reading this book is that the temperature measurements are provided in Celsius instead of Fahrenheit and the weight measurements are in the metric system. Americans will need to brush up on their conversion techniques.

In addition to the step-by-step instructions, there are quite a few beer brew recipes provided in the book. This might be a nice bonus for the beginner because it provides a trusted source for reference; however, I would have preferred this space be used for even more background information on various styles of beer. There are so many recipe resources online and at your Local Home Brew Shop (LHBS) that it almost seems unnecessary to include it in a book. That’s just my opinion though.

Overall, the book was a good read and stood up well to other books from the same genre. I would recommend pairing this book with a few other home brew books before getting started. When I started thinking about home brewing, I started with 8 books for reference, which might be a bit much, but nobody should be without 2-3 good, quality brewing books and a friend or two with experience to help.

The book is available for purchase here.
