Alien Invasion! The Beer Alien crew invaded the 2017 edition of the Rhythm & Brews beer fest to mingle with the humans and of course sample some of San Diego’s craft beer. This beer festival also features live music and this year the fest had Ashley Hollander , Tighten Ups and local rock legends POD. The brewery list consisted of wide variety of over 50 San Diego breweries.
With the weather threatening to dump rain, we had some concern about the event being as enjoyable as it should be, but despite some gentle “San Diego style” rain, all the humans we saw were having a great time. Some huddled under umbrellas, the beer tents or just “braved” the rain and kelp drinking.
As we wandered around, we focused on beers that we had not tried yet but still had to pick up some tastes of some favorites. It was also great seeing so many of our friends from the San Diego craft beer scene. This event is always a good time.
So, now some information for you humans that decided not to go to this festival…. you missed out.
Over 2,500 humans (and a couple of aliens) attended this year’s event which featured some newer breweries including Black Plague, Rouleur, Ebullition and Wiseguy Brewing. Mainstay favorites were of course also there making up a record number 141 craft beers poured by 64 breweries both local and out-of-state. As usual, some of the available beers were brewed for the Rhythm & Brews festival.
Some of our favorite beers this year were White Labs – “Amber Lager w WLP882 Czech Budojovie Lager Yeast,” Pure Project – “Milagro – Dry Stout w/ Coffee & Vanilla,” Indian Joe – “Boysen Blurry and Pineapple Passion Fruit Gose,” Rock Bottom – “Surfer’s Solitude Red Ale” and Midnight Jack – “Catalina Coconut Porter” to name a few. There were so many good beers on offer.
We also enjoyed the variety of human food available from the food trucks. There was something for everyone, even us aliens. One big treat was the amazing chocolate from So Rich Chocolates. You humans sure do love chocolate and when we taste creations from So Rich, we understand why. One last treat was seeing Rudy and Amy from Craft Beerd and getting to see their new merchandise including their new pins.
San Diego native human Steve said “this beer festival is the best one I have been to in San Diego” about his first Rhythm & Brews festival. We also spoke with Arizona resident Lisa who said “this beer festival alone is worth the trip to San Diego.” Lisa happened to be coming to San Diego on the right weekend and bought tickets and now she plans on attending every year.
There was a 51% increase in ticket sales this year. Based on the crowd gathered to see POD’s live set, we would guess that a significant number of this year’s increase in tickets were due to POD. However, regardless of why the humans bought tickets, they did and we commend the San Diego Brewers Guild for putting on yet another amazing event. After all, the musical component of this festival is an important part of what makes this beer fest different.

About Rhythm & Brews:
The San Diego Brewers Guild’s Rhythm & Brews music and craft beer festival pairs many of the country’s most celebrated craft breweries with local musicians for its annual bookend event. On Saturday, May 6th from 1 to 4 p.m., craft beer aficionados gathered along ‘Hop Highway’ in historic downtown Vista Village in Southern California to sample IPAs, barrel-aged brews, sour ales and much more from over 50 of San Diego’s most acclaimed breweries, all while enjoying live musical performances by Ashley Hollander and San Diego’s own Grammy nominated P.O.D., while enjoying delicious eats from local food trucks.
Proceeds from the event benefit the San Diego Brewers Guild, the nonprofit that works to support the county’s innovative brewing community as well as the Brazilian Institute for Arts and Culture, an organization whose mission is to facilitate the education of Brazilian arts and culture to the community.
