Newtopia Cyder is a social, urban-minded and hand-crafted cider house. This tasting room is designed to showcase cider in a modern-industrial environment, inviting guests from all around San Diego to partake in enjoying these artfully created beverages.  With the motto “Concocted with the purest botanical ingredients, foraged from the four corners of the Earth.”, this Scripps Ranch newcomer will and shall rise to the top in San Diego’s brewery dominated market. 

Paying homage to the roots of his childhood, Rick Moreno was determined to leave the corporate bureaucracy to start a company that got its start from the ground up in Scripps Ranch. Fascinated while traveling the world, Rick took an interest in exploring, documenting and collecting new herbs, exotic spices, unknown plants and botanicals which could be incorporated into cider. Inspired by the Victorian era of men and women traveling plant hunters, Newtopia continuously seeks to craft cider with ingredients that are peculiar to the American palate.  The space features ciders that can be enjoyed at the bar or at the cider garden patio. There is also the option of taking ciders home in a unique Newtopia Cyder growler. Featured throughout the taproom is 100-year old reclaimed eucalyptus wood that survived the 2003 Cedar Fire, where Scripps Ranch residents had to be evacuated. 

When I was there they had their Flagship Cyders on tap which included:

  • Indian Pale Cyder – The IPC dry-hopped cyder is produced with a blend of tropical hops to make a distinct aromatic off-dry cider with an apple forward taste. 
  • Semi-Sweet Cyder – An off-dry cyder with hints of elderberry flowers and eucalyptus. 
  • Belgian Cyder – An international cyder made with pineapple, cardamom and Belgian spices. 
  • Wyld Cyder – An off-dry, fruit-infused cyder made with marionberry. 

In addition to these fine offerings I also enjoyed Chai Me a River with cinnamon, chamomile and chrysanthemum and the newly made Strawberry Vanilla with ripe strawberry puree( a whopping 80 pounds per 5 barrels), vanilla bean and hints of toffee. While there I noticed that in addition to the current offerings, they also are planning on having a double version of their IPC which Rick describes as hopped up and off dry with hints of crabapple. I am also looking forward to the My Darling Clementine which is a blended apple cider which hints on bright citrus, tangerine peel yet also being extremely off dry..

Newtopia is the ideal industrial cider house headquartered in Scripps Ranch, San Diego, CA. Conveniently located within a eucalyptus embedded industrial park that features a warm, inviting, humble tasting room offering diverse rotating in-house handmade crafted cider. The cider house features a 400 square foot cider garden patio with rotating food trucks. The apples are sourced from private crushes held at orchards all across the West Coast that are shipped into Newtopia’s cellar farm. Once arrived, they go through a two- to three-week fermentation in tanks where Newtopia controls the temperature, adds nutrients and creates magic. Newtopia is a 30-barrel batch cider house featuring New World American ciders owned and operated by Rick Moreno and wife Jennifer Hays Moreno. 

Newtopia Cyder is open for enjoyment Monday-Sunday, with food trucks as well but as they are working Cider House, check their website for daily hours as they fluctuate to support day to day operations.
