Here is another awesome beer from San Diego’s Ballast Point! Starting off in 1992 as Home Brew Mart, Ballast Point originally sold supplies and ingredients to local home brew enthusiasts until launching their own brand in 1996! They have recently made headlines being sold at a staggering one billion dollars! The Tongue Buckler Imperial Red Ale is a heavy brew coming in at a solid 10% ABV and whopping 108 on the IBU scale! Don’t let these figures fool you though! Tongue Buckler is surprisingly smooth with an aftertaste that is not too overpowering.
Appearance: Pours a medium to dark red/amber that has a small thin head that dissipates quickly.
Aroma: Light hoppy aroma with hints of citrus. Slight malt and caramel notes hit the nose as well.
Flavor: Much more flavor than one would think based off the aroma. Pine, tropical fruit with molasses undertones combined with malt. It has a slight bitter finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium body, crisp carbonation with a bitter finish. Strong aftertaste is not too overpowering.
Overall: Imperial Reds are always heavy on the pallet and Tongue Buckler is no exception. It is not a beer for the faint of heart, but if you’re up for the challenge you will find that this brew is surprisingly smooth for its high ABV content. Another solid beer that Ballast Point has added to their repertoire!
