The Aliens decided to get educated this weekend and checked out the beginner’s home brew class offered by Ballast Point’s Home Brew Mart in Linda Vista. The class is set up in the back of the home brew mart and goes on for about 3 hours (with beer breaks in between, of course). Running for about $20 the class includes 3 half pours of Ballast Point beer, a take home “Home Brew Mart” taster glass and a 10% discount on brewing supplies after. The Home Brew Mart, if you’ve never been, is filled with rows of various grain offerings, yeast strains, bottles, and beginner starter kits among other home brewing essentials.
Chris was our home brewing guru for the day. Presented like a classroom located in the back of the shop with seats lined up and a powerpoint presentation guiding you through the home brewing process. Chris comes from years of home brewing experience plus teaching classes at the now closed Mother Earth Home Brew Shop. The beer that was demonstrated for the class was a classic Kölsch style beer. Chris walked the class through the ingredients and explained the purpose of each and what flavors would be imparted on the final product, passing around glasses of the hops and grain being used in the boil. He gave tips on what do do throughout the class and specific things he does personally that help with his process of brewing.
Throughout the class we were able to enjoy some of the many beer offerings provided by the Ballast Point tap room. Deciding to begin on the lighter side we sipped on the Even Keel session IPA but then quickly jumped onto the Thai Chili Wahoo and Ginger Big Eye.
The favorite was ultimately the Thai Chili Wahoo, a light easy drinking witbier that hits the back of your throat with tingling spiciness. A must have for the spice loving Human or Alien. This beer ended up being a wonderful pairing with the Ultimate Nachos that were provided by the catering company Gnarly Nachos which was posted up in the back of the tap room.
Overall the class was a great experience and a must do for anyone who just wants an overview of what home brewing entails. A general review of the recipe plus a more detailed description of the brewing process is given, but it is a good idea to take notes since Chris gives the class recommendations from his own experiences.
